An audio time machine.......2006-08-02
I bought this album as a lovesick teenager in 1990. Revisiting it again it brought me back so quickly I felt like I could step out of the room and into the past.
Those looking for a song as good as "The Promise" will be disappointed... but the album is full of excellent vocals and song arrangments. The lyrics--well, this is the only weakness. Song after song seems to have brilliant, poignant words for the verse only to follow up with a chorus that is bland and verges on non-sequitur.
And after so long, I'm still not tired of it just the same.
Some questions if anyone knows trivia:
1) The last two songs "Total Devotion" and "Everything" seem muddled together a bit, for example, the chorus "Everything, everything" appears in "Total Devotion"... and the insertion of the title into the song "Everything" sounds awkward every time. What's going on with that?
2) Who IS the girl on the cover?
I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. (I promise).......2006-07-16
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be.
But if you'll read more of this review, I'll make you fall for it, I promise, I promise you I will. When in Rome: Clive Farrington, Andrew Mann and Michael Floreale were part of an earlier Manchester outfit, Leisure. Leisure featured Corinne Drewery, who would go on to front Swing Out Sister. After Swing Out Sister had enjoyed their ten minutes of fame with the single 'Break Out,' When In Rome stepped up to join the ranks of one-hit-wonders. Their 1988 single 'The Promise' was by far their biggest commercial success, and the popularity and staying power of the song is evidenced by the fact that it has been the most requested song at nearly every 80's music station. They released just the one album, and promptly faded into obscurity.
'When your day is through, and so is your temper,
You know what to do, I'm gonna always be there.
Sometimes if I shout, it's not what's intended.
These words just come out, with no gripe to bear.'
Until one movie would resurrect this 80's pop band. Napoleon Dynamite, which made its debut at the Sun dance Film Festival in January 2004. Napoleon was released to theaters in June 2004. That's when the song 'The Promise' became popular again hitting the top of Billboard's Dance Club Play chart. 'The Promise,' remixed, was the first single from their self-titled debut album. It was an instant success barely missing the Top Ten in the United States peaking at #11. Months later the trio reached Billboard's pop chart's lower reaches for the last time with 'Heaven Knows'. The Promise 2006 New CD, featuring never before released versions of 'The Promise' and the newly released radio edit mix of 'The Promise 2006'. This 7 track CD also includes their classic hit 'Heaven Knows'(Ultmix mix) and includes a bonus track 'Wherever You Go.' From their new CD soon to be released.
Pop heaven.......2006-02-17
The megahit "The Promise" certainly COULD have been the first of several hits from this album, had the record company chosen the right follow-ups. The two should-have-been followup hits on this album, "Wide Wide Sea" and "Child's Play", both featuring really infectious choruses, would have been better programmed right after "The Promise", giving the album a stronger beginning. Other highlights include "Everything", which brings to mind The Hollies, and "Heaven Knows", with its Pet Shop Boys-like intro. There isn't anything too deep going on in the lyric department here (apart from the singer being bothered by his partner "dancing with another"), but, hey, this was the Eighties, remember? Repeated listenings reveals that this is really a quite wonderful pop album. OMD, Pet Shop Boys, The Human League, and early Tears For Fears are obvious influences, and if you like that kind of sound, this is a must. It would be nice to see an expanded edition of this CD, with the B-sides "Tonight", "Basilia", "1000 Questions", and "Whatever the Weather" (also on the original UK 12-track version with "Big City".)
Awesome CD!.......2006-02-11
I have to say that "The Promise" is my absolute favorite 80's song! I love lots of 80's songs, but nothing compares to this one. Whenever I listen to it, it brings back good memories of my high school days. I can still remember the first time that my best friend and I heard it, and how we went crazy trying to find out who sang the song and what the title of the song was!
I am SO glad that I found this CD! The other songs are good, but "The Promise" is what really makes this CD worth buying. I've wanted this song forever, and it's a song that I never get tired of hearing, so it was worth it to spend a couple of bucks to get such an awesome song!
