311's place in rock `n' roll history seems secure. Unfortunately, so does its sound. Unlike other funk-inflected acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even Incubus, 311's never fully expanded on the promise of its initial musical vision. On Don't Tread On Me, the band's eighth studio release, P-Nut and the gang seem intent on mining the same familiar terrain they have since their 1995 self-titled classic. Fans of albums such as 2001's From Chaos and 2003's promising Evolver will likely find Tread familiar and perhaps even comforting, but it's unlikely to invite a new horde of fans as the album often sounds like an imitation of the bands 311 helped inspire in its decade-plus career. There are some nice touches. "Speak Easy," "Waiting" and many of the other tracks evoke images of sandy beaches and warm summer breezes, but none are strong enough to help Don't Tread On Me stands out from the herd. --Jedd Beaudoin
Customer Reviews:
Another Amazing Album From 311.......2006-11-29
311 have been together as a band for 15+ years and over the years have continued to pump out one 5 star album after another. Don't Tread On Me, while not my favorite 311 album, still dominates over the competition. While many artists are screaming in anger, whining in an emo voice or rapping about how cool it is to commit acts of violence, 311 and Don't Tread On Me are a comforting break from all of that sadness and negativity. Past 311 albums have been mostly dominated by both vocalists Nick Hexum and SA Martinez singing and rapping together. Don't Tread On Me has one rap/rock song called Solar Flare, which is a colorful commentary on the ills of modern day politics. The other songs have Nick and SA singing interchangably and some parts in wonderful harmony. One pleasant surprise is that SA Martinez gets to show off his always evolving vocals in the songs Getting Through To Her and It's Getting OK Now. The only weak part of the album is that it only has 11 songs and is under 40 minutes in length. But taking the band's main message of positivity into play here, I can all say that I am very thankful for another amazing 311 album and hope that there are many more to come in the future.
It's not that bad.......2006-10-22
I bought this CD after I heard 311's version of The Cure's "Love Song," which was my first taste of 311. I gave it four stars because I haven't heard their other albums, and so I came in listening to it with no real expectations. I did think that the singing would be a little better, but overall, the CD is something I can listen to while driving or doing homework. It's pretty mellow. My personal favorites were Long For The Flowers, Getting Through To Her, and There's Always An Excuse. For those 311 fans who've listened to every album, they probably weren't able to take Don't Tread On Me for what it is. Comparatively speaking to other music that's out there, this CD really isn't that bad. It's not great, but I do listen to it pretty often, and I'd recommend it if you like easy going, island style music and have no expectations as to how this should sound.
311 .......2006-09-01
311 has consistently blended several genres of music (many times when people ask me what kind of music they play, I cannot even describe it), five amazing personalities and excellent lyrics. I have seen 311 live at least 16 times (maybe 18) and was in Memphis this year; every, single show saturates my entire being: body, mind and spirit. To me, they're music is powerful art. I make my own 311 compilations, emulating what THEY do- and the average number off every album is two or three songs, (including off DTOM). The deeply unique element of 311 *is* the wide range of musical and song style- DTOM is just one more example of this. Frankly, some of the lyrics read like poems (which is valuable in and of itself). I love 311 and am grateful for the energy they bring to the planet. I plan to support every album they work hard to produce to keep them going strong! Amy Ginko
sooo sad.......2006-08-14
i am a huge 311 fan and find this cd to be immensely disappointing....this cd makes me want to hold up a sign at the 311 show im going to friday reading "dont tread on me play real 311"...the way you know that its an awful cd is that it would sound awful live...grassroots and music remain the best of 311 the blue album is up there and even though transistor was experimental at least it was full of dubby reggae not poppy predictable stuff found on tread on me...apparently nick hexum and SA can not rap anymore and settled for sunny choruses...311 does not groove anymore i use to love how their music went from soft melodies to hard guitar raps and drum solos all in the same songs....if 311 continues to sound like this nick hexum might as well put out a solo cd
Loyalty.......2006-07-13
Friends and 311 lovers alike, we need to remember how difficult it is to make EVERY single CD a smash HIT. 311 has had numerous chart topping singles. It just so happens that this past album (Don't Tread on Me) was different from what we're used to. The loyal 311 fans will enjoy and await the next album. However, I do like Evolver better also.
