Kelly Clarkson could have played her American Idol-propelled career much differently, languishing in the role of dippy ingénue or shunting her musical development by leaning too heavily on overnight stardom. Instead she dug in her heels and allowed good sense (or a good manager) to steer, and somewhere Simon Fuller and the rest of the TV gang ought to be smiling. Credit Breakaway, which couldn't be more aptly titled--the sophomore effort represents a seismic split from the thin if pretty debut, Thankful. Here we encounter Clarkson as superstar, with the humility that made her likable on the first disc tucked tightly under her arm. First single and leadoff track "Breakaway" topped the pop charts on arrival, and its rock-friendly thumps, dips, and rolls don't wear out their welcome. Instead, they blend into the firestorm of beats and guitars that is "Since U Been Gone," another shout-it-out rocker. Those songs set the tone for the rest of the disc in all its fury: The innocence is long gone, "Addicted" and "Hear Me" say. The big, expressive voice ringed by the occasional high-pitch trill--the one that prompted millions to get behind her on Idol--doesn't dip entirely off the radar, though. On "Where Is Your Heart" and the stunning live closer "Beautiful Disaster," it's there in full force--a hint, maybe, that despite the wide, smart career step Breakaway represents, her fans come first. -Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Best of the Best.......2007-05-15
This is a GREAT album full of rock, pop, soul and just awesome tracks. I find it funny when I read reviews who give this album 1 star saying "it's not my kind of music, so therefore it's terrible" Umm well if it's not your kind of music then why are u even wasting your negative energy to review it or even listen to it and then calling it terrible because you're board? I guess you're deaf.
Kelly is an amazing singer who can sing the freakin' dictionary and make it sound good. Nothing she sings sounds bad so stop the hatin' and clean those ears up. I feel for you because you're missing out on an amazing singer. She blows all the idols away and she's about to do it again with her new album MY DECEMBER COMING OUT JUNE 26!!! LOVE IT!!!
Keep on rocking.......2007-05-12
Kelly Clarkson as a rocker is just as hot as Kelly Clarkson as a pop princess. She should continue with this kind of music
KELLY CLARKSON ROCKS!!!!!!!.......2007-04-14
I am a big fan of kelly clarkson. i have owned this album for about a year and a half and i still love it. her new song "never again" was premiered today on the radio and it is the best song that i have ever heard. but her old songs, rated by yours truly, are as follows:
1. Breakaway- i have not always liked this song. it is okay. i never payed much attention to it when it came out, but it is still a good song. 3/5
2. Since U Been Gone- 2nd single. great work! one of my favorites. it has always been a good song. i think that this song should have been her first single. 5/5
3 Behind These Hazel Eyes- 3rd single. pretty good. it is a little overplayed, but i'm used to it. 5/5
4. Because Of You- 4th single. this song is the reason i bought the album. this song also has a great video. after fighting with her husband, her 6-year-old self helps her flash back to her childhood and shows her how her parents broke up. and after she sees it, she runs back to her husband and gives him a hug. 5/5
5. Gone- I think that this song was almost a single. it was played on sirius radio, but i didn't hear it anywhere else. i guess it must have failed, which it shouldn't have because it is a great song. 5/5
6. Addicted- i don't really like this song. the lyrics make it sound like she's on drugs. either she is, she knows someone who was, or she just knows a lot about drugs. 2/5
7. Where Is Your Heart- 3/5
8. Walk Away- the best song ever!!!!! it was her 5th single and it is one catchy jingle (hey that rhymes). the video is hilarious. she is singing for a radio station and the entire city starts dancing to the song. my favorite part is when a guy is dancing in the bathroom and another guy comes out of a cubicle and the other guy leaves; then the guy that came out of the cubicle starts dancing. if you don't like this song, you don't have a pulse!!!!!!! 10000000000000000000000000000000/5
9. You Found Me- 4/5
10. I Hate Myself For Losing You-4/5
11. Hear Me- 5/5
12. Beautiful Disaser (Live)- great song. the original version is featured on her old album. i like this version better because she sounds better singing this song live. 5/5
i can't wait for her new album to come out. i don't know the title, but i
know it is going to be just as good as this album. kelly clarkson never disappoints.
Don't buy this album.......2007-04-13
