After his riveting role as Raekwon's trusty sidekick on the landmark Only Built for Cuban Linx, it was inevitable that Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah would fly solo on wax. True to early Wu Tang form, Ironman is a family affair. The fragmented flows of other Clansmen are present on RZA-spawned adrenaline rushes like "Winter Warz." What differentiates Ironman from the rest of the Wu is Ghostface's vulnerability, belying the superhero overtones of the album title. The genuinely touching dedication "All That I Got Is You," and the bitter remonstrative missive "Wildflower," reveal an emotional frankness behind Ghostface's infectious verve and densely woven wordplay. Wu-Tang sound scientist RZA takes note, imbuing his patented razor-sharp dissonance with explicitly soulful hues. --Del F. Cowie

Ghostface Killah - Ironman.......2006-11-07
After the Wu-Tang Clan dropped their impressive debut with "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)," many of the clansman in the group started dropping solo albums. The Genius/GZA was the only one to release an album before the group became known with his "Words from the Genius" record. But him, Raekwon, Method Man and Ol' Dirty [...] all dropped albums consectively from 1993 to 1995. Then in 1996 in was Ghostface Killah's turn. My overall second favorite in the group (and probably the most skilled and lyrical). His album "Ironman" was very well anticipated but does it live up to the hype and can it follow the Wu-Tang pattern with all of their previous solid solo and group releases?

Ghost comes out.......2006-08-03
With this album, Ghostface's blossoming into one of the best Wu rappers was completed. He was a minor presence on "Enter the 36 Chambers", but with his sidekick performance on Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..." his flower cracked, and blossomed fully on his first solo album. In time he has become the most visible (and let's face it, relevant) member of the Wu, and this album is the genesis of that stardom. His raps, and the support he gets from his Wu-Tang gangmates are as sharp as they got in this time era. He shows off his versatility on this album, which was produced by the inestimable RZA. Ironman - and its numerous Al Green samples - is seen as the bridge to the Wu-Tang's sound after 1997: cinematic and often soul-infused. For me, this is also the final brick in the Wu-Tang's solid gold wall of rap creativity and envelope-pushing, three years and five albums of genius rap. Every collection needs this!
