On The Life and Times of S. Carter, Jay-Z's century-closing guaranteed-platinum album, he compares his hit-making prowess to that of Michael Jackson--the unspoken difference being that Jigga appears to be far from wearing out his commercial welcome. For good reason, too; not only is the Roc-A-Fella king maker one prolific rapper and writer, his output is of high enough quality to keep heads ringin'. While there's no single classic on the order of "Hard Knock Life" here, collaborations with Dr. Dre (the truly defiant "Watch Me"), Juvenile ("Snoopy Track"), and UGK ("Big Pimpin'") argue well for Jay-Z's continued vitality. Further proof may lie in the fact that, faced with mass bootlegging weeks before the CD's release, the Z-man added several tracks, effectively revising it at the last minute. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2003-11-25

This CD is great! Jay-Z is definatly a hip-hop superstar, and he's a great lyricist. There's nice beats on here, and great guest appearences by memphis bleek, Beanie Sigel, Amil, Dre.Dre, and UGK. This does have great tracks, and I'll rate them:

So Ghetto: Very nice in lyrics and a tight beat to fit, nice way to start the album. 5/5

Do It Again: This is nice too, and it's got a catchy chorus. 4/5

Dope Man: Really like this one. He's still got great lyrics. 5/5

Things that you do: Ah, this one is okay, not the best. I'm not a big fan of Mariah Carey. 3/5

It's Hot: Can't stop it while it's hot!!! 5/5

Snoopy Track: weird name, but a great track! Great chorus too! 5/5

S.Carter: Nice lyrics, a beat, and great chorus. 5/5

Pop 4 Roc: I don't care for this, it's not that good. 2/5

Watch Me: Great track wit Dre.Dre! 5/5

Big Pimpin: Awesome!! Love the beat, and some really tight lyrics! nice! 6/5

There's been a Murder: Love this too. It's really great. a highlight fo'sho. 5/5

Come and Get Me: Nice track, Jay-z is still sounding great. 5/5

NYMP: Haven't listened to it enough, but sounds good.

So overall, this is a tight album. You won't be disappionted. And the intro and outro are great too. definatly a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Best cd i ever bought.......2000-09-19

i like every song on this cd and i got my moneys worth without a doubt

2 out of 5 stars Brother Pimping backround music is a ripoff.......2000-07-18

The background music of Brother Pimpin (track #11) belongs to an Egyptian musician. I used to listen to that tune years ago when I was a kid growing up in the Middle East. I thought that some credit would be given to that artist, but none was to be found in the JAY-Z's CD. Isn't it illegal for an artist to do that? Or at least a credit should have been given to the Egyptian artist. I just thought that this was just a rip off.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2000-07-05

This cd is awesome i recommend that you buy this cd if your thinking about it. My favorite song on the album is Big Pimpin, and S.Carter.
