A lone voice sneers "You are about to witness the strength of street knowledge," and with that warning the greatest-ever gangsta album begins. Then these Niggas with Attitude--wicked rhymes by Ice Cube, Easy E, and MC Ren; soulful production courtesy Dr. Dre; beats provided by DJ Yella--come barreling into your face, just daring you to ignore the streets of Compton (or any American city) even one day longer. From the anti-police brutality anthem "F**k Tha Police" to the angry, unflinching realism of "Gangsta Gangsta," to the pro-free speech "Express Yourself," this is slammin' and ruthless. --David Cantwell

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bullet holes in the head of the music industry.......2007-04-28

I can only think of a few albums that have really had a major impact on my life. Straight Outta Compton has got to be right at the top of the list. As a young teen I bought the cassette and wore that thing out in my walkman.
I was immediately drawn to the bada** beats and catchy rhythms. Just the raw sound of the bass drum hitting hard will energize anyone listening. The voices of rap legends Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC Wren harmoniously unite with the smooth and powerful sounds generated by Dr. Dre and Yella Boy.
But the real hypnotic power of these songs is infused in the lyrics. These guys rap about their tough circumstances growing up in Compton, an extremely dangerous and crime-ridden city in California. As their words depict the harsh times they constantly endured, the listener is pulled in to a world they might be unfamiliar with. I know I was clueless.
I'm not sure if it's done intentionally, but they really romanticize the ghetto life. They glamorize the gangster attitude. I found an overwhelming appeal to this.
I am no longer much of a rap fan since the N.W.A. days. But I'll always remember the spirit that encompasses this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Gangsta Rap at its best.......2007-03-08

NWA was one of the first Gangsta Rap groups to hit it big back in the '80's. Several of their members (Dr. Dre, Easy-Z, etc.) became stars in their own rights as solo acts, and many have followed their treading footsteps into rap acts as well. This album ranks as one of my all-time favorite rap albums, simply because its original and unduplicated. Many of today's artists have fallen in love with sampling, which does nothing to show their own talents, but more in the line of showing respect to previous artists. "Straight Outta Compton" is one of the more recognizable tracks on this album, and many have used the catch-phrase to adopt it to other sayings. "Gangsta Gangsta" is a popular song from this album as well, often played back in the dayz in many youngsters' cars, cruising the busy avenues late at night. Even people who were far from being "Gangsta" loved the song and felt that it gave them street cred. "F**k Tha Police" was a mega-hit amongst the rebellious teens enamored with the idea of sticking it to the law enforcement, which received a lot of public criticism. It still ranks as one of the most controversial and memorable rap hits from the dayz. "Dopeman" was another popular hit with the hard-core rap fans, as it presented listeners with a unique sound of reverse-scratching and timely beat-pauses. With its unique sounds and original lyrics, NWA went on to release several more albums, but none caught more attention and fire than this one. If you're looking to add NWA to your collection, skip the others and add this one. This one, due to its originality, could be even better than their compilation albums... which leaves out some of the more underrated hits ("If It Ain't Ruff, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars Gangsta rap classic!.......2006-12-04

NWA is the best group in gangsta rap history. Ice Cube(conscious gangsta), Mc Ren(the villian), Dr. Dre(rapper/maestro), Eazy E(the hip hop thugster RIP) and Yella(the DJ) breathed life into the rap game and took the world by storm. Straight outta compton set standards for what a rap album was supposed to sound like and NWA set standards for what a rap group is supposed to sound like. Standout Tracks: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, F*** THA POLICE, GANGSTA GANGSTA, IF IT AINT RUFF(Ren kills it on a solo tip), PARENTAL DISCRETION IZ ADVISED, SOMETHING LIKE THAT, COMPTON'S IN THE HOUSE, DOPEMAN, 8 BALL, EXPRESS YOURSELF(the original and remix), QUIET ON THE SET, A B***H IS A B***H etc. Filler: None. Bottom Line: Straight Outta Compton is a classic that is needs to be in every rap fan's collection. The dope shock value lyrics, the tight productiion(provide by Dr. Dre and Yella) and the little insight that they give in certain songs are all reasons why this album is worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars One of the originals!.......2006-11-17

NWA was an original rap group and with that being said, this is definitely a must have album for rap lovers. Along with Public Enemy, NWA christened their genre with hard core lyrics and tight bass beats. Although I don't agree with some of their lyrics, one would not expect this white kid to fully understand their view on life. Anyways, buy this album, I recommend it. Keep it away from the kiddies though!

1 out of 5 stars "A great album!".......2006-11-05

Yeah, right. Try telling that to anyone who suffered through the '92 L.A. riots. "Macho" crap like this played a huge factor in how thousands of people took some loser getting beaten up and spun it into an excuse to wreak havoc on a bunch of innocent people for a week.

Garbage like this provides the soundtrack for young suburbanites who are lucky enough to not have to put up with this thug crap every single day. Stick 'em in the neighborhood where Dre and Eazy-E grew up for a few days and they'll listen to this album with a fresh perspective before smashing it into a million pieces with a hammer.

This is garbage made by garbage.

Something tells me this will be an unpopular review, which only further solidifies the fact that America has completely lost it's grasp on their morals.
