Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2004-05-01

I'm not familiar with much of Schoolly D's other work, except for a couple of tracks and the theme to Aqua Teen Hunger Force. So, honestly, I can't compare this to other Schoolly D albums to say whether this is worth buying versus any of his other ones.

The packaging on this really doesn't tell much about the music actually on the disc. The cover art looks more like a crazy funk-rap party type send up, and in fact this is one of the most low-key rap albums I think I've ever heard. The tempo stays pretty slow through the entire thing (with a couple of exceptions) and the vocals are mixed really, really low. With the exception of the fact that this is rap music, it's not too different in production and mood from Portishead. Another friend of mine compared it a lot to Tricky, although Schoolly D has more of a straightforward rap mentality compared to Tricky.

The brass tacks of this album are that it captures a really unique mood and doesn't change for the entire album. There's not any big standout "single" track on this disc-which is a plus.

Also, check out the funk beat-rap-trip hop type mix on "Ghettofunkstylistic."
