2 out of 5 stars Far from victorious.......2007-05-04

Do or Die had become hardcore favorites throughout the Midwest and in the underground nationally after their great first two albums, Picture This and Headz or Tailz. The Chicago trio of Nard, AK-47, and Belo Zero had established themselves as a unique act, a hardcore group with a talent for rhyming quickly and harmoniously. Both of their albums went gold despite little mainstream airplay, and they appeared to be traveling the Rap-A-Lot path to success (a la Geto Boys) when "Victory" dropped. And in my opinion, "Victory" is the reason Do or Die never become bona fide rap stars. In 2000, the market was ripe for Midwest artists, as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was at the height of their popularity and the two groups had a running feud. Rap-A-Lot had also inked a distribution deal with Virgin, so the album would have better promotion and distribution. If they were to make another album as great as Headz or Tailz, they would likely have vastly different careers. "Victory" is basically, a mess. Everything great about their first two albums, well, is absent here. The classic collaborations with Johnny P and Danny Ray? Nope. The Legendary Traxster behind the production boards? Nope. Grimy street tales over gloomy g-funk? Sorry, nope. "Victory" is basically a mess of poor club songs and slow jams. They obviously are aiming for mainstream success and they fail. There is a handful of good slow songs, made in the vein of "Nobody's Home" and "Can I" from their last album, and they are effective and inspiring. The club tracks are all lyrically worthless, and the production doesn't appeal to me. The hardcore underground aspect to the album is absent. I'd only recommend this album to the die-hard DOD fan, the tracklist is bloated and while there are a few good cuts, the album as a whole is quite disappointing.

The album starts very strong, with the title track, a great song. The dramatic strings and choir singing in the beat make for a great musical backing, and the trio spits cocky and emotional rhymes in between an inspiring, fist-pumping chorus. "If U Scared" is a decent song, the triple-time raps are impressive but I don't really like the beat. "In a Mode" is easily one of the best songs here, a seductively produced slower song with heavy bass, a great harmonized hook and good rhymes by all parties, showing their unique sing-song rhyming pattern. Even Johnny P can't save the lyrically and musically flat "Keep It Real," an odd and unappealing blippy track with tired rhymes, their deliveries can only carry this song so far. The banging "Who Know?" is all right but forgettable. "Tha Heist" is pretty good, but again not very memorable, lyrically it is nice but musically kind of average. My favorite song is easily "La, La, La," a harmonious and very well produced song. It's catchy and has nice rhymes and singing with a great hook, like the very best Do or Die songs do. "Can U Make It Hot" has a very nice beat, but that's all. "V.I.P." begins the downward spiral of the album, a badly executed fluffy club track that approaches six minutes in length. The bass heavy "Bounce for Me" is terrible lyrically, another whack club track with an awful chorus. The more hardcore "If I Don't Eat" is better, but still not great, the production and lyricism just aren't amazing. "Stay Focused" is inspiring and well produced, executed very nicely, a good slow and spiritual song. The following Ja Rule collaboration "Murders, Pimps + Thugs" is bad, a horn-heavy club song and lyrics on cruise control. Once again, "Ride" is a failed club track. "Thuggin' It Out" is inconsequential, a collaboration with Fatal from Outlawz in unnecessary anger. The album ends on a better note, the nice "Already Know."

Even if you love Picture This and Headz or Tailz like I do, take a pass on "Victory." I think even Do or Die knew they had messed up with this album, titling their next disc Back 2 the Game and readopting their hardcore underground sound. Stick with their other albums, because Do or Die is an awesome rap group and I'd say this was easily the worst DOD album.

4 out of 5 stars Not a flawless victory but it gets the job done!.......2006-09-22

Standout tracks: VICTORY, I U SCARED, KEEP IT REAL, WHO KNOWS, BANK HEIST, CAN YOU MAKE IT HOT, VIP, IF I DONT EAT, MURDERERS PIMPS PLUS THUGS, RIDE(fatal is hugely underrated), THUGGIN IT OUT and ALREADY KNOW. Filler: Bounce for me is too clubby. Bottom Line: This is DOD's most consistent effort plus this album came out at a time where you were guaranteed a good album from a Rapalot artist(Yukmouth, Scarface, The Snypaz etc). And also this is way better than Back to the game and Headz or Tailz two huge dissapointments for me.

5 out of 5 stars Chi Town Style, Chi Town Victory.......2006-04-19

Many people bash Do or Die, saying they lost tempo with this album. Its true that "Picture This" and "Heads or Tailz" are exceptional albums, but it doesn't mean this album is at all bad. It is great for Do or Die fans as well as any fan because this still makes a better cd than ne other garbage on the radio nowadays. If people don't like this album its because they don't understand the style Chitown produces. Our rappers don't just do hardcore music. If you really listen to all Do or Die's albums, you will realize that 1/3 of the songs are soft and melodic, while 1/3 is catchy and great riding music, and 1/3 is hardcore jamming. Thats just the diversity of this group, to be able to produce soft-r&b like music with johnny p or even by themselves, make more cruising or chillin beats like "in the mode", and also make hardcore songs like "thuggin it out"
the album starts off strong with victory, and ends even better with already know with e-40

5 out of 5 stars OK..........2006-03-04

This cd isn't their best work, but it does have some good songs on it, like "Victory", "In A Mode", and others. I hate to say this but compared to the other Do or Die cds, this is probably the worst one, but compared to other rappers cd this is probably better than most. It's a good cd for Do or Die fans or just rap fans.
