The leading ragamuffin hip-hop exponent--loosely defined as reggae deejay style meets its hip-hop cousin--works his considerable musical imagination for this 1988 LP. Digging deep into his African and Jamaican roots, drawing on the funky sounds of his adopted U.S., and scanning contemporary news headlines for pertinent lyrical material, Unity reveals Shinehead in his finest hour, before his patchwork style of music-making became formulaic. Spin-off hit singles, including the title track, "Chain Gang Rap," "The Truth," "Gimme No Crack," and "Who the Cap Fits," stitch together a dizzying array of sounds: a bit of churchical reggae hymn to a short stretch of B-Boy rap, a speed toasting rush, a sweet R&B classic riff, or a verse from "We Shall Overcome." --Elena Oumano
Customer Reviews:
Shinehead wicked everytime!!!!.......2006-07-31
From the fast talking to the singing to the whistling. Shinehead is wicked. "Know How Fi Chat" was always my favorite off this classic CD. Wasn't able to pick up everything he said when I first heard it, but some time later when I put it all together the word "Genius" came to mind. Lyrically, shinehead was "ahead" of his time (no pun intended)
Shinehead pretty much SHINES..........2000-07-19
This is a very unique blend of reggae, hip-hop, and gospel - and it all adds up to be one of the classics in hip-hop music. Shinehead definitely made a name for himself on this unique, yet daring album, especially with his fresh head-bobbing cut "Chain Gang Rap." Shinehead proved to the music world that any normal guy could make it in the music industry and he did just that, but unfortunately, his lyrical style and musical blends became very mundane with other hip-hop music out at that same time era, especially with his future disappointing LP "Sidewalk University."
