Doing her thing with an '89 swing, MC Lyte's Eyes on This finds her to be a confident lady microphone controller, throwing braggart like a gattling gun. But it's pretty easy to puff up, like Lyte does on nearly all 13 tracks ("Slave 2 the Rhythm", "Throwin' Words at U", "Shut the Eff Up! [Hoe]") when you have some of hip-hop's best producers in your corner. EPMD's Parrish Smith, Brand Nubian's Grand Puba, and Audio Two mix the majority of the tracks, while family man Milk pops in for vocals. Even Marley Marl gets off the throne to produce "Cappucino," with MC Lyte dropping her grudges just long enough to weave something metaphysical around a bad cappuccino experience. Eyes on This is, if nothing else, a cool trip back to drum machines (listening to the great bounce of "Stop, Look and Listen" feels like following one of those 10 cent superballs down an endless flight of stairs) and a totally free license to sample. --Todd Levin
Customer Reviews:
A True Master of the Ceremonies!.......2006-09-11
Lets not discriminate and say she's a great woman MC, MC Lyte is an amazing MC!!! Doesn't matter one way or the other. As far as rap skills go she has complete crowd control and her raps are really dope. This LP will open you to the greatness of the world of hip hop music. Excellent release...and if you've been sleepin on it, go cop it when you get the chance. Its money well spent. Peace!
MY FAVORITE FEMALE MC!!!!!!.......2005-12-19

Simply the best on old school.......2004-10-21
This cd is the best of the best! You can't go wrong with hits like "Cha Cha Cha", "Cappucino" and "Stop, Look, Listen". I would rate this album a 10 if I could. MC Lyte was the tightest female rapper on the east coast. Everyone says Queen Latifah was, but I really dont think you can put QL 2nd album up against MC Lyte's Eyes on This.
ATTITUDE, LYRICS, VOICE ! ! ! & RHYTHM.......2004-07-10
I fell in LOVE with the LYTE when I first saw Lyte As A Rock. I was amazed that she stepped up and claim her throne in the hiphop industry. She definitely has not been recognised like KIM or Latifah, but her influence to the game would never be surmounted by any other female MC. "Eyes on This" is definitely a classic hip hop album. Its like the Female "ready to die". She showed that the ladies were capable of being way better in style and lyrics than some men. Her attitude and flows and themes were so amazing that I paid so much attention to whatever she was saying. The L-Y-T-E is the undisputed "QUEEN", "DIVA", "GODDESS" of hiphop. She is the female RAKIM definitely. Keep on doing ya thing.
Check The Rhythm The Rhyme, Yeah It Fits!.......2004-03-07
This is THE definitive album of all time showcasing the incredible talent of being a hip hop MC. MC Lyte is without any doubt one of the greatest MCs of all time. At a time when Big Daddy Kane was heating up the scene with tracks like RAW, MC Lyte was entertaining hip hop audiences in 1989 with tracks on 'Eyes On This' such as 'Stop, Look, Listen'. 'Stop, Look, Listen', produced by King Of Chill, is a perfect piece of hip hop mastery. The beat makes your head automatically bob. A classic by all means. Other tracks like 'Cappucino', produced by Marley Marl, display MC Lyte's ability to paint a vivid picture with words alone. 'Cha Cha Cha', also produced by King Of Chill, is poetry in motion. I saw MC Lyte perform some of these tracks at the 'Sisters In The Name Of Rap' concert, and I have to say that she sounds even better live. This is a rare and remarkable asset though. This entire album is a listen, you can play it from start to finish. Every track on 'Eyes On This' can easily hold its own. This is a must-have for any hip hop lover. Peace to MC Lyte, the Audio Two - Milk & Gizmo, King Of Chill, Pee MD, Grand Puba Maxwell, DJ Doc and Marley Marl.
