(3+half) The real BLOOD of underground hiphop........2007-02-27
There was alot of buzz around '92 when EAZY E signed these 2 Jewish rappers to Priority Records. From what i remember they were the 1st Jewish rappers on a major label at the time. Their sound is really original and funky with their religion being a huge influence and focal point of their lyrics. So when the lead single "Stabbed by the Steeple" came out in '93 alotta fans including myself immediately dug it and went out and got the album. Overall the album is tight with "Stabbed by the Steeple" possibly being the best cut on it. With other strong cuts such as "This Great Land Devours", "Southern Comfort", "Stick To Your Kind", "Im Not The Man", "3-2-1 Contact", "Another Nail In The Coffin" (excellent), "Life" and "Niggaz & Jewz" feat.Eazy E. The others are not weak they're just not as tight as the others and/or sound too similar to other tracks. Overall it was a very strong debut from a crew that went through alot of contractual crap after this to only release one other album "EyeDollarTree" which was also tight as hell.
Blood of Abraham.......2006-03-21
Before Matisyahu, before Eminem, there was Blood of Abraham. I remember when the first album came out. What is this? Jewish rap? We still called it rap back then, not hip-hop. I ran out to Wax Stacks Records and got Future Prophets by Blood of Abraham, on cassette tape of course. As I was about to turn and leave the store, the guy at the counter called be back, and lo and behold, gave me a handfull of Blood of Abraham stickers. The next day I went around and put them up everywhere, after all, at last there existed a serious group comprising musicians of my own ethnic group utilizing a hip, modern form of music. When I excitedly told my rabbi about it, he told me it wasn't dignified to vandalize public property by putting up stickers. The next day, I went around town removing all of the Blood of Abraham stickers I could. After all, I was a proud, dignified Jew and proud, dignified Jews do not vandalize. But then the next day, I decided that this was the best chance of spreading the message of being proud and dignified. So I took the remaining stickers and put them back up all around town.
Most of my friends didn't understand.
"What does 'jah!' mean? is that a drug reference?"
"If they're Jewish, why arn't they Blood of Jacob?"
Another one asked me to repeatedly play the song about beating up on rednecks. I tried to explain to him that I didn't want to offend the community of the American South. He said nothing about the funky basslines or the incorporation of freeform jazz. He had never heard of Eazy-E. Because this was years before Subliminal or Remedy or anything else, I listened to Blood of Abraham over and over. It fit a little better then Public Enemy. And yet it wasn't until this year that I understood the Taxi Driver references. So run out and get Future Prophets, and the new one, Eyedollartree, because Blood of Abraham still kicks.
