Is the Artist Formerly Known as What What the elusive "complete" emcee with ovaries you've been looking for since Lauryn Hill's post-Miseducation meltdown? Well, in an industry plagued with 6th-rate Lil Kim knock-offs, honestly, Grae might be as close as it gets. On the battle rhyme "Hater's Anthem," you get a small taste of the attributes that rank her alongside Bahamadia as far as smart wordy flows and rewind-able punch lines go. Here, Grae promises to take out all "…lame dames that couldn't be felt with Braille scripture." Sure, the refrain that repeats on the hook is unnecessarily coarse, but "Take Me" sees Grae going morally deeper over a vastly overused sample flipping a one-on-one-with-God soliloquy that's stylishly provocative. Cannibal Ox's off-kilter cerebral rhymes and a perfectly-placed mesmeric flute loop help to break up the pace of Bootlegs on "Swing Blades" for listeners who might tire of Grae's fairly monotone rapid-fire flow. Conceptually, "Chapter One: Destiny" rates as next level because it ends leaving the listener with the option of determining the fate of a fictional unnamed assassin. Beats-wise Bootlegs is slightly above average although Grae junkies will be happy to know that the alleged last track actually segues into a 45-minute collection of her ripping verses over familiar beats from popular Eminem and Scarface cuts among others. When she's not doing that, she's performing equal opportunity remakes of popular Jay-Z tunes like "Excuse Me Miss." Whether the new material on Bootleg has cemented Grae's position as the next best femcee only a full-length release and time will tell. Until then, you can enjoy the inclusion of some of her back catalog singles with Natural Resource ("Negro League Baseball") on here. --Dalton Higgins

4 out of 5 stars Nice flow would be better without the homophobia..........2006-11-11

I was just introduced to Jean Grae by some friends. After reading the other reviews here I was super excited to hear a dope female MC rock it. While Jean's flows are nice, she could lose the "faggot" references. I don't know if she uses them to gain some respect from her male peers or what. Very disappointing to hear yet another underground hip hop star spout hate language. Hopefully her newer albums reflect that change.

5 out of 5 stars OK People.........2006-10-29

This sista is serious with hers! She means what she says! Haters Anthem is the main song for me here. Serious!

5 out of 5 stars real underground Hip Hop.......2006-09-28

One of the best female real underground album !!!!Her first and second album are hers best anyway!!!!! Undeground and not bling bling at all !!!

5 out of 5 stars Why Listen To Commercial Rap....When Jean Grae Is Reason Enough To Stray Away..........2006-06-16

Short and to the point.....6 tracks of pure listening enjoyment. But I have to admit that one track put me over the top..."Take Me". Jean displays poetic mastery over a smoothed out hip hop funk type track. Jean's lyrical display is matched by very few. Even though, Jean doesn't get mainstream appeal and recognition, I think that this is something that she is extremely comfortable with and rest assured that real hip hop heads will deeply appreciate Jean's contributions to hip hop. Also check out the underground mixtape..."Jeanius"(which is a very hard find, but if you can cop this gem, you're in for a treat). Good listening.

5 out of 5 stars This Woman Is A Rap Artist Point Blank.......2006-02-19

Yo I heard about her through an associate. Then I finally heard her on The Roots album The Tipping Point. I have been a fan every since. This Bootleg is probably one of the best mix tapes you gon hear from any rap artist male or female. Every thing she does is a masterpiece. She holds her own with a difinitive, creative and complex flow. Unlike some other female artist that get outshined on their own albums. I'm lookin foward to havin like ten albums from her. I can't get sick of her.The bonus hidden tracks were so hot they were almost unbearable. Me being a wanna be artist myself I almost quit after hearing her deliver her passion felt lyrics on every beat. Very clever intelligent and beautiful. She comes harder than most men do on a track and just as graceful as a woman you could fall in love with.
