If You Can't Play Slide, You Can't Play Bass Guitar.......2006-09-06
That is just it right there! SLAVE is one of the Funkiest bands that ever recorded music. I learned how to play the Bass Guitar from listening to Slave and the PFunk. If you cannot play Slide then you need to slide on to something else. You can't funk if you can't Slide! Bass players everywhere need to pick up a SLAVE record and follow Mark Adams and let the Bass take you there--I was twelve when Slide came out and It is still a Favorite. They should have won a grammy just for the name of the song alone!! Don't forget "Separated" or "You and Me' and the ever-funky "Son of Slide"--Just more funky songs. Mark Adams,Mark Hicks (Drac)and Danny Webster do their thang! The Horns of The Fearless Leader Steve Washington, Floyd Miller and Thomas Lockett sound as seasoned pro's and Tim Dozier I believe was their best drummer- Steve arrington was decent on drums Roger Parker was tight but, Tim "Tiny" Dozier was the best. He should have tried out for Parliament or Parlet
SLIDE: THE FUNKIEST JAM FOR THE SUMMER OF 77'.......2006-03-19
It was on July 4th in 1977 at our family reuion (at least for me I was only eight years old at the time) when I first heard the cut Slide. My uncle was the DJ, and when he played "Slide" everybody from family members, friends, strangers/people walking by, I mean, just stop dead in their tracks in what they were doing and just started partying like crazy at the park to this record!!!!
Like someone said earlier, the bass to this hardcore, classic funk track just hits you like a BOMB!!!! All I have to say is, "Slide" was definitely the jam of the day during that whole summer, I mean you could not (particularly in the hood of course) even leave the house without hearing this funky ass jam.
A Double Edged Sword.......2005-08-18
This CD has been in my collection for many years.Bought for it's reputation and it's fantastic album cover-one of my all time favorites."Slide" is a great yowling funk tune, cool gimmicky bicycle horns too."Screw Your Wig On Tight" is cool too-rocks a little harder but cool.As for the rest of the album?Well it jams and jams and jams and jams and jams and jams and JAMS!!!!!All Slave tend to do on this album is endless funky jamming-very true to the form but kind of boring sometimes. Those in the state of mind to hear singable, written tunes won't find music to their liking here.
'Slave' is an album you put on after you've been listening to James Brown and early Tower Of Power. It is not in keeping with the funk of the late 70's and what other music Slave would become known for in the years to come. There are no electronics and even a hint of dance or pop influence here-it's straight ahead classic funk and nothing more.Ametaurish, plain jane horn heavy funk without the frills so keep that in mind when you get this.
A RAW FUNK CLASSIC.......2005-08-11
My father bought this albume for me on my 7th birthday. I was blown away andplayed side one of the album religiously for about three months, and when I finally flipped the record over, I was blown away again. "Slide" is the cut everyone knows...and everyone SHOULD know it. This song is a piece of history. The first 10 seconds of this song is microcosm of what funk was all about: the groove (Mr. Mark's classic bass line), the wacky (the "dracula" laugh), and the UNIQUE (the bicycle horn). Straight up...this album is one of the funkiest of the 70s. Honestly, I think that at this point Mr. Mark--even though he was just a 15 year-old kid and it was his first album--was probably the nastiest bass player in the funk kingdom...nastier than Verdine, Larry, Louis, AND Mr. Mu-Tron himself (Bootsy). Mr. Mark didn't need any effects. Drac's guitar-playing is over the top as well. "Slide" is one of the few songs on black radio from that era that had rocked-out guitar solos that wasn't played Ernie Isley are any of the P-Funk guitarists. My favorites on the album are "Slide" (of course), "Party Hardy", and "You and Me" which was the first song on side two of the LP.
This is album is a funk classic. The band was raw and not as polished, but then funk was meant to be that way. If you've never listened to SLAVE, on this album they sound something like early-Pre-JT-Taylor Kool & the Gang's evil, agressive, and much more menacing twin. In any case, this one's a classic...if not for the funk then for one the best album covers of all time.
Slave's debut Album....Mmmmmm!!!.......2005-06-21
In 1977 Black America was wearing Afro's, Bell-Bottoms, Platform shoes and jamming the # 1 song "Slide" by a group from Dayton Ohio called Slave. No doubt that the song "Slide" could be considered one of the funkiest song of all-time but to say that their debut album is an all-time classic would be far from the truth.
In 1977 Slave was a group of guys straight out of high School (a few were still in high school) Steve Washington (The leader of the group) is the nephew of the Ohio Players trumpeter Ralph "Peewee" Middlebrooks. These guys were young and just straight up gutter when they played. They were so raw and funky but far from being a mature and polished group as you will hear on their debut album. Sound to me like they were going through a transition trying to find a style that fit. Several of their songs like "Screw Your Wig on Tite", "Seperated", and "The Happiest Days" reminds me of The Ohio Players. "You And Me" reminds me of Brass Construction. Now..."Slide" was Slave's signature sound and they stuck with that but it wasn't until 3 albums later that Slave's sound started to get mature and polished. "Just A touch of Love" album was the beginning and the next album "Stone Jam" was a Classic and the album after that "Showtime" was indeed a Masterpiece. All I can say is Slave's debut album is a Cool straight up in your face I'll slap ya Mama kind of Funk but the strongest foundation of the album is "Slide" and "Son of Slide" the rest lacks true substance but still not bad for a group of kids straight out of High School.
