Customer Reviews:
True voice of an angel.......2004-06-24
Have you heard such pure, clear and simple voice? I almost feel dizzy listening to her. I only with Welsh lyrics came with the CD. Of course, even if you don't know Welsh at all, it is a treasure to own. As this is made in Japan, the sleeve notes are all in Japanese. But that doesn't subtract any charm from this CD.
Mary's early recordings - in Welsh.......2003-03-01
The ten songs here were recorded when Mary was just fifteen and before she became famous. Although all sung in Welsh, you will recognise some of the songs, as they are covers of songs already made famous by others. With Mary's distinctive high soprano and sparse musical backing, they sound different from usual, but fresh.
The English titles of the songs covered include Turn turn turn (Byrds), Tammy (Debbie Reynolds), Morning of my life (Bee Gees), Something stupid (Frank and Nancy Sinatra) and Can't help falling in love (Elvis Presley). There are also covers of Plaisir d'amour and Guantanamera, so it's not only English language songs that were translated into Welsh for Mary to sing.
If you have already heard her later music, you are likely to have heard her sing The sparrow in English - you can hear the Welsh version here.
The quality of this music is impressive, especially as it was recorded on a small independent label. The playing time is short for a CD, but I don't think there were any other tracks to add - these were her only recordings before she signed to Apple.
Excellent Beginnings!.......2002-05-17
This CD is essentially Mary Hopkin's portfolio before being discovered by Twiggy and Paul McCartney. Since she was not recording in a studio with all the support a record producer provides, there is a much greater emphasis on her voice. The first song "Tro Tro Tro" ("Turn Turn Turn"), is the one which Twiggy heard her sing on the TV show "Opportunity Knocks," just before calling McCartney. It is a joy to listen to the song and imagine hearing her actually singing this music selection during her audition with Apple Corps Ltd.
Her voice is quite high-pitched, and very well controlled. All the songs are sung in Welsh, but many of the selections are chosen from American pop singles of the 60's (e.g. "Tammy", "Can't help falling in love"). It will be a wonderful addition to any devout fan's collection of Hopkin music.
Anyone who dislikes pop or folk will not find much here.
Don't listen to this CD with any expectations.......2002-05-14
This CD contains both pop singles in Welsh. It is significantly shorter than a typical album (about 1/2), but is worth it to any Mary Hopkin fan. Her voice sounds a little different than in her studio recordings, but this is because of the fact that she sounds more real -- not canned. The digital remastering obviously plays a role here. Don't feel threatened by the fact that most everything is titled in Welsh -- many of the songs are recognizable. An example of this is the song "Pleserau Serch," the title of which is translated to "Plasir d'amour" on the album cover. This song is easily recognizable as "Can't Help Falling in Love."
If you're a Mary Hopkin fan, consider adding it to you're collection. It's well worth the treat.
