Mariah Carey's #1's is as much a time capsule of '90s pop and R&B as a record of one woman's chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly '50s-style "Vision of Love" to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs ("Honey"), Jermaine Dupri ("Sweetheart"), and O.D.B. ("Fantasy"). Some hit, some miss, but all feature the fluttery swoops that Carey substitutes for expression of feeling. Depth is beside the point, but few of these tracks are even fun. Still, after eight years, there seems to be no stopping her, and this album will hardly break her streak of successes. --Rickey Wright

Could be better.......2007-02-13
Simply put this CD is missing anytime you need a friend and without you.
Before the style changed..........2006-10-13
This 1998 album was the last Mariah came out with before she stopped just flirting with and went full-speed into hip-pop, starting with 1999s "Rainbow" and going to last year's "The Emancipation of Mimi." Now, don't get me wrong, the woman has had a few good singles in this new hip-pop era of hers'; in fact I like all 4 of the big singles from "Mimi." However, the new output pales next to the fantastic POP songs on "#1s."
The album shows how good she was...huge ground-breaking ballads like "Love Takes Time" and "Hero," makes-me-want-to-cut-a-rug dance tracks like "Emotions" and "Someday." Plus her specialty, fabulous mid-tempo gems like "Always Be My Baby" and "Dreamlover." And who could forget one of the most popular songs of all time, "One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men. The single spent 16 freaking weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, more than any other song ever! Plus, this album shows how good she was when she just flirted with hip-hop, on the 2 great cuts "Fantasy" (although not this tacky version with ODB, but the original album version) and "Honey."
There are so many good songs missing that didn't make #1, so get "Greatest Hits" for those. In fact, just get "Greatest Hits" because it includes almost everything on here plus good stuff like "Can't Let Go" "Make It Happen" "Without You" "Anytime You Need a Friend" the aforementioned "Fantasy" original version and "Butterfly." I am disappointed because neither "#1s" or "Greatest Hits" has "Breakdown" with Bone-Thugz on it, one of my faves of Mariah's.
I wish Mariah would lose some of the "Hip" and gain back some of the "Pop" so she could make music as good as this again. This disc is as good as R&B/pop gets.
A Diva she maybe..........2006-04-14
but she's earned the right. This CD is a must have for all MC fans. Mariah has had an amazing career, despite her brief lapse a few years back, but everyone needs a little break now and then and I'm sure the whole situation was blown out of proportion. Actress she may not be, but this gal can sang. Highly Recommended.
Mariah Carey is amazing.......2006-04-01
Mariah Carey is one of the all-time best singers in music history. Her ability to hit typically unfathomable notes is, of course, her trademark and signature; but unlike some of her contemporaries, especially the late 90s and early 2000s pop stars like Britney Spears, her singing is the reason for her popularity, as it should be for any singer. Her #1's is a great CD, as are many compilation records by artists because they feature their big hits and not the filler from the actual studio releases. Impressively, Carey has had an incredible amount of singles but also an amazing number of No. 1's, more than any other female artist and rivaling only The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Even though #1's is not meant to be a Greatest Hits package (as Carey has said in the enclosed album art) like her official Greatest Hits CD released several years later, it certainly comes off as one. Mariah's voice remains powerful throughout the years as heard on #1's. Brilliant--certainly worth purchasing because it compiles the sound that made the 1990s.
