Customer Reviews:
You've listened to the rest, now step up to the best..".......2006-08-16
After hearing Northern Soul afficianados brag about tunes like "You're Absolutely Right" by Steve Aldo (a British artist who put out just a precious few scarce 45's), I was delighted to find this CD. Alongside are many equally rare songs such as "It's Just Love" by John Andrews and the Lonely Ones. Even the seemingly stylistic "reaches" like pop songbird Helen Shapiro are just outstanding! The West Five weigh in with a very faithful reading of the Reflections "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet," and Manfred Mann's original guitarist/woodwind man Mike Vickers delivers a solid instrumental. Like many comps, this one is artisticly diverse, changing directions often, but it hangs together marvelously. Here again, I envy the guys who combed the vaults to select these songs. For more, and better details, see the other review below!!
You're ready now, you're ready now - for British soul!.......2001-06-02
This is an excellent collection of obscure British soul recordings from the EMI vaults, thoughtfully put together by Kev Roberts and Pete Smith for the Goldmine/Soul Supply specialist label. The 26-track CD contains soul, pop and easy-listening cross-overs, mainly from the 60's, only two of the tracks are from the early 70's. Highlights include Jack Hammer's great rendition of "What Greater Love", Samantha Jones' (of Vernon's Girls) ultra commercial "Surrounded By A Ray Of Sunshine" and Timi Yuro's unparalleled cover of Baby Washington's "It'll Never Be Over For Me", for years a classic on the Northern Soul scene. The original vinyl single on UK Liberty from 1969 has a price tag of more than 100 British pounds! Rare and very hard to find is also Bobby Bennett's 1969 single on UK Columbia, a cover of Frankie Valli's "You're Ready Now", written by Crewe-Gaudio. It might be of interest to Herman's Hermits fans that bassist Karl Green sang the high-pitched vocal harmony with Bobby Bennett in the chorus of "You're Ready Now". Noteworthy is also Gene Latter's highly commercial cover of Marvin Gaye's "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby". The people behind the Goldmine/Soul Supply label are to be commended for making these otherwise nearly unobtainable rarities available on CD. The accompanying booklet is very informative and interesting, with rare photos of some of the artists.
