Amazon.com essential recording

Rarely in popular music has there been a family so closely associated with the sound of a city as the Nevilles and New Orleans. Since the mid-'50s, Art, Aaron, Cyril, and Charles, as the Neville Brothers and as solo artists or central contributors to key Big Easy bands, have defined that wonderful, sensual gumbo of soul, blues, and funk that is the sound of New Orleans. This compilation, a two-disc set compiled by Rhino with their usual attention to detail, follows the brothers in almost all their recording incarnations through to the mid-'80s, just before they released their most popular records for A&M. It is an extraordinary testament to filial chemistry and, in Aaron's voice, one of the most beautiful instruments in all of popular music. It is worth noting that, fine as it is, the version of "Tell It Like It Is" here is a live one and not Aaron's original divine single. Also, the compilers sadly decided to exclude any recordings by the Meters. That said, this is an essential document of a quintessential American band and will stand in good stead until the inevitable and definitive multi-disc box is issued. --Rob Stewart

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars But BEWARE - This is only DISK ONE!!!!.......2006-10-07

Does anyone know where I can get the 2nd CD?

4 out of 5 stars Superb collection showing both depth and breadth of Nevilles.......2000-03-13

An incredible collection spanning the entire recorded career of the Neville Brothers, from The Hawketts' (featuring Art Neville) first release in 1954 through live tracks recorded in the mid-80's. The range of styles is impressive, including late 50's New Orleans Rock 'n' Roll, sentimental ballads, early 70's funk, Mardi Gras band music, and more heavily produced sounds of the 80's.

The compositions include a huge number of gems from the Allen Toussaint catalogue (some credited to Toussaint, some to "Naomi Neville"), tracks from the individual Nevilles (including Aaron's jail-penned "Every Day" and Cyril's classic "Brother John"), as well as songs by Lieber/Stoller, John Hiatt and others. The big hit single with a bullet ("Tell It Like It Is") is included in an excellent live version.

The big revelation to me was hearing Aaron Neville's incredible voice singing so many different styles of music. Besides the ballads that I was already familiar with, Aaron proves himself able to handle more upbeat pieces handily.

Overall a great collection of great songs from a great band. The only thing that's probably better is to get all the original singles and LP's.
