Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Seven years after her debut at just 15 years old, Aaliyah assembled a third studio album that was astonishingly mature. Sadly, her death just a little over a month after its release stilled a promising voice in R&B. At 22, when most artists would just be getting started, Aaliyah had already progressed from pop to street to an unconventional retro-modern, risk-taking version of R&B. While lead track "We Need a Resolution" is as mainstream as it gets, there are fewer hits on this album than on previous efforts. Instead, this collection is an extraordinary romantic exposition of passion and pain. While Missy Elliott is cranking out jams for all her "club freaks," Aaliyah is like a modern-day (if less vocally gifted) Minnie Riperton, exploring the pains of moving from child star to adult sex symbol. Tracks such as "Never No More" and "I Care 4 U" (featuring Missy) are slinky, twisted ballads imbued with film-noir sultriness, as diva Aaliyah steps catlike away from the bubblegum R&B of her contemporaries. There's also the obligatory rock track tacked on near the end ("I Can Be"), but even this excels above the standard hip-hop/rock/R&B crossover fare with its Prince-like influences coupled with Aaliyah's own instinct for seduction. Aaliyah also signaled a move away from her long-standing musical relationship with producer Timbaland, who contributes just three cuts. Having started out heavily supported by R. Kelly, it appeared that Aaliyah was more than able to go it alone. --Jake Barnes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Aaliyah", just ordered it from England.......2007-04-05

I guess you have to do, what you got to do, in order to get great stuff! I ordered "Aaliyah" from For Your Entertainment (F.Y.E.), and it arrived from England 7 days later. It also featured "Try Again" on it. And the whole packaging of the album was different. It folded out, instead of just opening up the plastic regular case. Now, I cant stop listening to the unique and lovely sounds of Aaliyah's voice. This album is timeless. And so many people are hating saying that this album isnt that good. Well, a lot of people probably expected Aaliyahs younger sound from 1996's "One In A Million". She grown up a lot from that sophmore album, and Aaliyah must of had likes varieties of music. So when people bought this album they were a little dumbfounded, just remember that artists do not like to put out the same old material. But back to "Aaliyah", the album is amazing, and really deserves 5 stars!!!

4 out of 5 stars nice cd .......2007-03-09

i heard about this cd back in june 2001 i heard about thought friend i grew up on aaliyah remebering aaliyah from her frist cd not her 2nd one back in 94 i didn,t that this didn,t sell much when released until this year. i follow aaliyah from age anit but number to her frist movie romeo must die the people who are saying bad thing about have a right to the person who that said aaliyah wasn,t known until she died that not ture the media and people know who before her passing. or they won,t tell you that she died the ture is as she wasn,t popluar as brandy or monica that means you won,t hear about her as much you did them she would come and go while brandy & monica where in limelight she did the oposite of thesse two this cd is good but not like one milion this cd was aaliyah best cd up to date this cd fall short to that we need resoultion made it the top 40 but this single would that would make it she had no problems with the frist and 2nd cd. but she left for 5 years so she would porblems comeback no wonder she wanted other people on this cd because she knew be as successful .

3 out of 5 stars A Little Off Target.......2007-02-16

This is a decent album, but something seems to be missing. I don't know if it's because the tracks seem too similar w/ one another, or if it's because the beats weren't catchy enough... but, it doesn't hit the spot for me. It's not a bad album, since "I Care 4 U" and "We Need A Resolution" were hits, and a few of the other tracks seem to be nice, but it certainly could have used a couple more solid jams to make it a better album. Aaliyah is stunningly beautiful and sexy, but this album doesn't do her justice. If you don't have any of Aaliyah's albums, I'd recommend getting her first release than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...I wish she was still here.......2007-02-07

Aaliyah's 3rd and final studio album was AMAZING. Every song on this CD is GOLD, I can listen to this CD without skipping the tracks. If Aaliyah was still here, she would have been bigger than Beyonce, Christina, and all the rest. She was a goodess, and she didnt have a Diva attitude to her. She is loved!!!!!! And missed.

5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-01-09

I ordered this cd for my teenage daughter. She is a die-hard Aaliyah fan. Very nice cd.
