<I>HIStory</I>'s 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," <I>HIStory</I>'s second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, <I>HIStory</I> was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of <I>HIStory</I> has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. <I>--Steven Mirkin</I>
Customer Reviews:
Not bad but...........2007-02-20
How many times people have to pay for Michael Jackson greatest hits album? Come on this should have been a single disc album. I already bought all of his old albums! Anyway I review the new songs there.
I liked They Don't Care About Us, Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, You Are Not Alone, Come Together, and Little Susie. They are all excellent tracks and I enjoyed them greatly. Scream, This Time Around, History, 2 Bad, and Smile are all average songs acceptable as filler
D.S., Money, Childhood , and Tabloid Junkie are very much junk.
Please Michael we all know you need privacy and tabloids are not treating you right and you had a "bad" childhood. I am sick and tired of hearing these type of songs over and over which are similar to old ones. So please stop nagging and make unique music
Definitely Makes History.......2007-01-16
The title of the album is very appropriate. With the first CD giving us a blast from the past of amazing songs, and the second disk pulling us into the future. Many people have complained about the second disk, but I find that the songs on it are quite brilliant. The first song, Scream, is one of the most original songs of the nineties. It has a sound you won't find anywhere else, and the brother/sister duo mix their vocals extremely well. The second track, They Dont Really Care About Us, is so passionate and stimulating. You almost can't help turning up the volume. Stranger in Moscow is one of the most beautiful songs MJ's written, and its production is top notch. Earth Song is THE most beautiful song he's done, and it has a feel that gives you goosebumps. Overall, the album is one of the best I've heard. Some people critisize it for being too angry, but the anger gives the songs a passion and a depth that other artists lack. Its definitely worth the money for this deep and interesting work of art.
HIStory Is Great.......2006-12-27
The media has attacked this album since day one! Why? Well, the reason is that this album is viciously attacking the media! After they tried to destroy Mr. Jackson with the FAL$E 1993 Allegations. This is Michael's most heart-felt album & definitely one of my favorites. The album still sold 18 Million Copies (36 Million Disks) worldwide.
This album mixes anger for injustice, racial equality, saving the planet and love. It is a truly wonderful album & Mike expands his musical abilities by producing the whole album and playing most of the instruments on the album.
Favorite Track - "Scream" feat. Janet Jackson
Least Favorite Track - "Little Susie"
Michael Jackson is clearly angry on this CD.......2006-11-25
I never got this CD, but I did see a couple music videos from this album(You Are Not Alone, Childhood, Scream, Stranger in Moscow, They Don't Care About Us). In the first 2, Michael is clearly pissed off about how he has been treated. "Scream" was one of those examples. This song was a music video from HELL!!! I was mortified by the video. He is on a spaceship, dancing wildly, screaming, and smashing things, with is hot sister, Janet, helping him out on revenge against the media. Truly, he is pissed out of his mind in this song.
WORST cd EVER-it is rock bottom.......2006-08-28
this is the worst michael jackson cd and worst CD EVER-although everyone in every music channel had critisize this cd as the worst i just listened it and had to add my criticism too-it is the lowest of the low collection-when the collection itself(cd1) is good but all its songs are already in previous better albums, and cd2 which is the new material and the slbum itself-IS BORING,SUCKS and the only good song in it is SCREAM.SCREAM is the highlight song of this album and is the only reason i bought it-i have never heard this song on radio or saw the video on tv when it was released in 1995-i heard some review in mtv show about michael jackson career-that this song was barely played on radio cause its too noisey , a collection of BLOWING EARS beats-this song never topped the charts and even janet jackson couldnt rescue it.BUT I LOVE THIS SONG cause its a special song with special sound effects i have never heard in any song.im amazed how michael jackson and the producers thought about this amazing sound effects-and the video is amazing too and i heard in that mtv show that it was very expensive to make.but this song really not worth to buy a whole album just to have it-u should get this song in other ways just cause its a special original song that the 90's gave to the pop colture.this album is LOW OF THE LOWS and michael jackson hit rock bottom with this album and with his life at this years this album came out-overall michael jackson reached to a climax only in 1984 with thriller and he could never restore this success with his later albums-his sells only went down and he really doesnt know how to reinvent himself-unlike his sister janet and unlike the greatest MADONNA who always walk one step ahead of the public music taste.michael jackson go only down in failure road-with this album and his later albums-DONT WASTE MONEY ON THIS ALBUM OR ANY OTHER ALBUMS THAT CAME AFTER THRILLER AND BAD-cause michael jackson music boring and doesnt get updated. i dont know how viewers can give this album 4 or 5 stars-i would give it one big ZERO.
