The only problem with the Time's first album is that it isn't really the Time. Sure, that's Morris Day singing. Who else could it be? The music, however, is provided by Prince. Back in 1981, Prince was a superstar waiting to happen. So you have Day's swagger and sexual come-ons ("Oh Baby"--actually, every track here!) and Prince making the whole shebang sound like a more psychedelic Ohio Players. No small compliment, that, although soon after this came out, the real Time formed and became the Twin City's all-time best R&B group. Which is why What Time Is It? is really the Time's classic debut. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
Excellent - Old School 80's.......2007-03-25
Just as I remember, makes you move and brings back memories!!!
Psychedelic & Funky R&B mixed a touch of the Minneapolis sound.......2007-01-14
When The Time first burst onto the scene with this album they were more in the vein of The Ohio Players but that wasn't necssarily a bad thing. The three singles from this disc Get It Up, Cool and Girl are all clasic songs. Get It Up & Cool are both guartneed to give you a sure fire work out on the dance floor. Every group memeber played a part in the songs Get It Up & Cool . Both of the songs havelayered funk riffs anchored by Terry Lewis' basslines, the dirty-minded lyrics, the catchy singalong chorus, Morris Day's quirky charisma, Jesse Johnson's manic guitar solos. While Girl is a classic ballad that showcaes Morris's falestto very well.
Memories............2005-08-26
Saw these guys in concert a few years ago and they still got it! They can thump and funk with the best of them! Their sound is unmistakeable...pure, uncut, unadulterated, are you ready cuz we came to throw down!
Get it up (yes, sampled by Salt n Pepa) not the other way around, happens to be one the smoothest pieces of funk groove, I've ever heard or recall jamming to. It's a laid-back kind of funk..a hard thing to accomplish when you think about it.
The Time..came on the scene right on TIME!
These boys kick it!
Major Funk Epic.......2005-08-05
The Time picked up where P-Funk left off. George Clinton admitted "The Time was the funkiest thing after us". Very raw sounding recording. It sounded like it was mixed "rough" on purpose. Even though Prince wrote, produced, arranged, performed, engineered and mixed the album he had help from Morris Day and his own band. Dez and Lisa co-wrote some songs and Morris is playing drums. Monte plays the solos on Get It Up and The Stick. Prince's guitar solo on Get It Up is probably the best he ever put on wax.
What Band Is It..............................................2004-12-13
What can be said for the Time's dubut album? IT'S NOT THEM (sorry if this disappoints you). This album was produced arranged recorded and mixed before the BAND was even put TOGETHER. Yes that's Morris singing lead but do you reconize the rest of the voices and the music (it's prince). Those of us who were into Prince thought it was a Prince album when it first came out (remember??) When Jesse (Johnson) first heard it (the album) he was like who is that?? It's rumored that Prince helped give birth to the Time for the following reasons 1,Morris wrote and gave partyup (off the dirty mind album) to Prince. 2,Being friends and old band members (don't quote me but I believe they called themselves Grand Central) he was helping a fellow musician out. 3.Having a major piece of the band didn't hurt his (Prince) pockets either. In spite all of this they turned out to be one of the greatest bands (in my opinion) of all times. Had not Jimmy Jam and Terry fallen out with Prince over money for not only playing for themselves but Vanity 6 as well or being late to practice (or whatever it was) could you imagine the hits this band would have put out (Janet Jackson's pockets would have been a whole lot lighter) Truthfully speaking I think Prince was scared of what they were becoming for they had gained on him in popularity by their second album. In closing let's not say it's their debut album but their letter of introduction.
