Weird album! 3 1/2 stars.......2006-01-04
This 1979 album by Mrs. Nasty Funk is a mixed bag, but overall a very interesting weird funk album.
The album was not released at the time it was recorded. It was recorded in 1979 , but as far as I know it was not released until the 90s.
Betty Davis is a bizarre sounding, nasty singer, funky as hell. The music on this Cd sounds sometimes a little dated, which may be caused by the time it was recorded( "Crashin' from Passion" has many disco influenced tunes on it).
On some tunes Betty Davis sounds like she couldn't sing ( pretty much out of tune, especially on the ballads), but somehow, this adds to the whole atmosphaer of this Cd.
The compositions are greatm, the list of musicians on this Cd who accompany Betty Davis is similar impressive - Herbie Hancock, Alphonse Mouzon and Chuck Rainey - and they sound really great and are very funky.
The composition range from Funk, a lot of Disco and some tunes sound like film music. My favorite tunes are "Quintessence of Hip" and "She's a women".
It's an interesting Cd you may need some time to grow into it. I didn't listen to it for almost a year after my first listen.
Betty Davis is a great writer, so-so singer ( partwise too much out of tune for me..) and a great personality. The band is awesome too.
3 1/2 stars.
It's Crashin.......2003-04-08
I purchased this album because I needed a funky outlet.
Im pleased with the album, but it left me wanting more. Then a friend told me that this album should not have been the first one that I decided to buy. Therefore, I have pushed on...
So for you first timers out-there pick up Nasty Gal, or They Say Im Different ((((First))))

Betty Davis is probably one of the best female R&B/Rock musicians that you've never heard of. She wrote what has been described as "ferocious anti-love songs with lyrics like: "He was a big ol' freak/ I used to beat him/ With a turquoise chain." She's best known for her marriage to Miles Davis and her work with Santana, Sylvester, Sly and the Family Stone, and Tower of Power. Davis didn't have a show stopping voice but she did convey incredible passion in her performance. She also released four or five albums in the 1970s before she vanished from the music scene completely, I'm happy to see that this disk is available. Hope you enjoy it!
