Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars JAMES BROWN SAMPLES HIMSELF (?).......2000-07-31

Since James Brown has basically never stopped touring since 1956, the CD title probably refers to the five year interval from his last studio album, UNIVERSAL JAMES (Scotti Brothers). That notable '93 effort, like its immediate predecessor LOVE OVER-DUE, should have hit the LP Charts hard and provoked a fast follow-up. Let's presume that radio station programmers did not take the challenge en masse. Anyway, this album, despite a good number of hitworthy numbers like "Break Away" and "Funk On Ah Roll (Original J.B. Mix)", is less "contemporary" than the aforementioned. "What It Takes" [aka "You've Got What It Takes"] and "Lucky Old Sun" [aka "That Lucky Old Sun"] are impressive takes of familiar R & B/pop; "Every Beat Of My Heart" is a free-flowing organ instrumental version of the '52 landmark. Ofcourse, there are the expected recuts, the best being "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" with a bright new St. Clair Pinkney solo. A compelling mix of the old and the new is "Peace In The World", presumeably riding a previously used rhythm ["Papa Don't Take No Mess"?] and causing JB fans to shake their heads one more time and say, Why don't I hear this on the radio?

3 out of 5 stars The J.B.Formula.......2000-03-02

while it's cool to hear James back and what not.nothing here really stands out.he can still groove and what have you but it's pretty much The JB Formula at work.He is still to Important of an Artist to be Ignored.alot of folks Owe Him Big Time.Just Like they owe Little Richard.

3 out of 5 stars Get ALL his classic records before buying this.......1999-11-01

The 3 stars is a gift. I saw JB in concert just last night (10/30/99) and if only he could capture on disc the unstoppable energy of his current live show in the studio...I guess that's what "Live at the Apollo '95" was for. On this most recent album, its really not bad at all when its an honest-to-God BAND playing the music. But much of the album is made up of the same sort of "modern"-sounding tracks that filled the junky '92 release "Universal James".

It's good to know the man's still making new music as he approaches 70, but there's nothing particularly interesting here.

3 out of 5 stars It's Good to see he's back.......1999-01-25

I was suprised to see James Brown released another album. What I heard sounded pretty good. He should try to get signed to a major hip hop label and just update a little bit. He is the foremost musical genius of the century, and it's great that he's back, but bad he's not getting his deserved attention.

3 out of 5 stars Still on "the one".......1999-01-20

Its funky, but no new ground broken here.James Brown did "the one" to perfection years ago.You will be better off investing in one of the boxed sets that chronicle his sound as he was developing it.Still,I've got this one pumping in my fleetwood right now.
