Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Excellent singer!.......2005-10-16

Theryl de Clouet has a fantastic voice, and this CD is very enjoyable to hear. It lacks, however, lyrical/musical imagination. I would recommend Galactic's Ruckus album (featuring Theryl on vocals) over this one; but this one is worth buying too.

3 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great.......2001-02-07

Got this CD 'cause I love Galactic funk wanted to see how Theryl would do solo. Personally, I really dig The Houseman's work with Galactic ("Change My Ways", "Everybody Wants Some", and "Start From Scratch" specifically). While I don't like to label music, this is definetely more soul/R&B than funk, so I was a little bummed. His band is competent and willing, but on the two tracks that Stanton, Jeff, Ben, and Rich sit in on ("I Get Lifted" and "Ready, Willin', and Able") you feel the energy and intensity rise. Still, it's a good listen and Theryl's got style that's rare in some frontmen. Not a Galactic CD, but still a worthwhile listen.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Magic From The Crescent City.......2001-01-17

Who is Theryl de'Clouet and where did he come from? Well if you remember the Soul group called Hollygrove, then you may be surprised to learn that Theryl was the lead singer. He also had a couple of solo releases which received some UK airplay in the 80s. On top of this, he currently takes lead vocal duties with the incredibly funky New Orleans combo called Galactic.

His vocal style is warm, throaty, and has just the right amount of roughness on the edges. A singing style like this can't be called anything but SOUL. And soul is something Theryl has in abundance. There's not even a sniff of the thin and obnoxious nasal whining often passed off as soul singing by some of todays young pretenders.

This debut solo release is a pure joy to listen to from start to finish. The album is a mixture of soul and funk tracks mostly written by Theryl and now deceased writing partner (percussionist) Michael Ward. A couple of tunes have Dan Penn's name on them and there are a couple of awesome covers too.

All the original songs have a great feel to them with quality, mature lyrics and beautiful playing from all concerned. Scott Billington proves once again that he is the most authentic torchbearer of real Soul Music producers. He never fails to assemble a fantastic group of musicians and he always brings out the best in all of them.

The covers are "I Get Lifted" which is approached from a much funkier, but no less soulful, angle than the one Benny Latimore treated us to many moons ago. The next awesome cover is a very dodgy one for me. It's a cover of "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" and ever since I first heard Donny Hathaway do that song back in the 70s, no other version has ever come close to the sheer depth of soul Donny wrung out of every line. That is.... until now. This version by The Houseman is fantastic. He doesn't have the range Donny did, but his voice is extremely soulful and he's mature enough to sing the song with real conviction.

The album was recorded in New Orleans so it's no surprise to hear a distinct New Orleans polyrhythmic syncopation present in some of the funkier, looser tracks.

All in all, if you're disappointed, as I am, with 90% of new soul releases being released - then you simply must not miss out on this album.

A rare gem. Buy it now.
