Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic Tony Orlando and Dawn tunes.......2005-06-02

This 3 cd set is just fabulous. These cds include songs from the New Ragtime Follies,Tuneweaving and Primetime LP's.These cds actually sound better than the LP's themselves. The only thing was the listing of one of the songs was a typo.It should have been"Sweet Summer Days of My Life" instead of "Sweet Summer Days of Love".That was the only minor flaw.I don't understand why they included the "Overture".If you want this CD till the other cds and dvds come out in August, these cds will hold you over till then. But they are rather expensive. But if you want to spend the money for these cds, they are worth it then. These are really great cds!! Tony Orlando and Dawn are really great pop icons from the 70's.They will be touring together later in the summer and doing cd signings. It will be worth the wait!!

3 out of 5 stars UK set-generous tracks but hold out for upcoming US reissues.......2005-04-20

I must admit the track listing is generous for the price-a budget box set. However the thought behind the track listing is not well balanced and the sequencing is haphazard. The Overture from "New Ragtime Follies" as a 2nd track followed by "What Are You Doing Sunday" makes little sense. If they removed the announcer, it would be ok-it is a great Overture. The set is missing a few of the singles. If it had all the Bell/Arista singles, it would function better as a survey of that catalog. The 45 version of "Steppin' Out, Gonna Boogie Tonight" should have been used instead of the LP version. The most serious flaw is that "Candida" and "Knock Three Times" are not the original mixes, but the mono remixes used for the original Arista Greatest Hits release in 1975. These mixes just don't have the life or beauty of the original. Yes, the original "Candida" mix was alittle rough, but that was part of its/"her" beauty. The newer stereo mixes used for the Rhino Best of or the Arista Definitive Collection would have been more tolerable. The overall sound quality is nice and clean, but alittle dull-not as dull as the DJ Specialist disc though. Packaging is classy but sparse-no liner notes, but that is expected at the price. If you are one of the die hard fans who must have EVERYTHING, or a casual listener who wants more than a one disc comp and the mentioned flaws don't bother you go head. Other wise save your money for the upcoming reissues from R2. ALL the BELL album tracks, singles, and b-sides as well as the Elektra albums, singles, and b-sides are coming this summer. There will also be a 3-DVD set from the TV show. A brand new Christmas CD is planned for October.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than Tie a yellow ribbon.......2005-03-14

This trio sang easy listening pop songs, scoring hits in Britain, America and elsewhere with some great songs. Tony had some success in the early sixties, when he had an American hit with Halfway to Paradise (a British hit for Billy Fury) and a British top five hit with Bless you. Neither of those songs is included in this compilation, which focuses exclusively on the trio's music from 1970 to 1974. The trio was made up of Joyce Vincent and Thelma Hopkins, both of whom had previous experience as backup singers with Motown.

Tie a yellow ribbon has become a classic. It was adopted as an anthem for Vietnam veterans and the use of yellow ribbons to symbolize homecomings has become something of a tradition around the world. The practice did not exist before this song was written, so it shows how music influences life in all sorts of ways.

Their other great hits, all featured here, were Knock three times, Candida, What are you doing Sunday, Say has anybody seen my sweet Gypsy Rose and Who's in the strawberry patch with Sally.

The remainder of this collection includes a number of covers, including Up on the roof (Drifters), You're a lady (Peter Skellern), It's all in the game (Tommy Edwards) and a couple of James Taylor songs (Rainy day woman, Carolina in my mind).

Different compilations have been released in different countries. This British budget triple CD is as good a compilation as any you're likely to find. If you like easy listening pop of the early seventies by groups like the New Seekers, you should enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars The World of Tony Orlando and Dawn.......2005-03-12

It would be easy to dismiss the music of Tony Orlando and Dawn as purveyors of lightweight '70s pop, bubblegum soul or easy listening pap.
But that's only if you don't know the history of this very fine vocal group, which became one of the most successful pop music sensations of the 1970s.
Sure, they had their own weekly TV variety show. And yes, they are responsible for giving the world "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Ole Oak Tree," a hopelessly hokey pop tune, which is still played everytime American soldiers find themselves captives in some hostile, foreign country. But Tony Orlando and Dawn, which consisted of the lovely Telma Hopkins and the delectable Joyce Vincent-Wilson had REAL talent and musical roots which ran deeper than most critics of the day often gave them credit for.
Orlando grew up doo wopping on the street corners of New York City. He'd been a teen idol in the early 1960s and recorded a few hits ("Halfway to Paradise," and "Bless You," not included in this set. Bummer!) which came from some of the songwriters holed up in Manhattan's legendary Brill Building.
Meanwhile, Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent had been a part of Detroit's thriving soul music scene with both women working as session singers for Motown Records and Holland-Dozier-Holland Productions.
Together, Orlando, Hopkins and Vincent made a very strong team and racked up a string of memorable hit records throughout the 1970s. Most of their hits are gathered on this collection appropriately titled "Legends," which is as close to a completely comprehesive overview of the act's recording career as you are likely to find. The collection does not include any of Orlando's solo recordings, nor does the set include the rare B-sides, or the group's later Sewnties recordings for Elektra Records. Still, it does include a range of tunes recorded in various styles that show off Tony Orlando and Dawn's musical versatility.
"Candida," and "Knock Three Times," two of group's first hit recordings are included, as well as minor hits like "I Play and Sing," and "Summer Sand."
"Legends" also includes a number of selections from one of Tony Orlando and Dawn's most successful pop albums "...New Ragtime Follies," an album of vaudeville-styled numbers that were the best of the ragtime pop movement of the 1970s, which found old fashioned sounding tunes by the likes of Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton John, The Carpenters, Bette Midler, Captain and Tenille, and Diana Ross bulleting to the top of the charts.
Some of best tunes from "...Ragtime Follies" that you'll find included on "Legends " are "Daydream," "Ukelele Man," "Who's In The Strawberry Patch With Sally," "Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose," "You're A Lady," "Sweet Summer Days of My Life," and "You Say the Sweetest Things," a rare duet between Tony and Telma. not sure why "Overture" from Ragtime Follies was included, it was a musical theme that worked specifically for that album as it sequed into other tracks. Here - as a stand-alone track - it sounds very out of place.
This impressive set also features Tony's rendition of "Up On the Roof," which remains a popular staple in his nightclub act to this day and "I Don't Know You Anymore," a rare solo turn by Telma Hopkins, who has gone on to become one of television's most successful and consistent comedy actresses.
The majority of the songs on "Legends" have an irresistable sing-along quality that make them charming and fun to listen to. Afterall, this was easy on the ear music created to take listeners' minds off Watergate and other politiical matters, gasoline shortages, a shrinking economy and other problems from that tumultuous decade.
There are oinly a few missteps here such as "Gimme A Good Ole Mammy Song," a silly tune that's one step shy of being racially offensive but is breezily saved by a strong vocal performance by Tony and Dawn. Special mention also must be made of the third voice heard on many of these songs. It belongs to Dawn's silent and unseen member Pam Vincent, who arranged many of the vocal harmonies performed by Dawn.
"Legends" is a fitting tribute to one of the 1970s most popular and enduring musical acts. These days, Tony and Dawn still get together occasionally for special performances that still delight and thrill their legion of devoted fans.
Until some of Tony and Dawn's original albums are reissued ... this 3 disc collection will do just fine.

4 out of 5 stars legends.......2005-03-10

this is a new hits collection pulled together on a 3 disc set for tony orlando and dawn fans ,however this hits collection has only the Arista years and does not included the elektra hits from the later mid 70s.although the bulk of the groups hits did come from the Bell/Arista years 70-74.most of the tracks,14,have never been released on cd ever, and have long been out of print.but at the same time, some of the tracks listed here have never been issued as singles or rare tracks such as SPARK OF LOVE IS KINDLIN,DONT ACT LIKE A BABY,IT ONLY HURTS WHEN I TRY TO SMILE,RUNAWAY,FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION are missing from the package but they included a OVERTURE71 BUT I think it is mislabled and is the overture from the RAGTIME FOLLIES in their 1973 lp.but why would they included an overture????i think this collection could have stepped it up a notch and included all the rare ,b sides and rare hits.the bulk of the hits are here, but if you want more you may want to hold out for the new reissued of all the DAWN lps /cds coming out for the groups 35th anniverary and dvd collection in june-august.look for tour dates and tv appearances.also ,worth noting, these tracks could have been included on a 2 cd set rather than a 3 cd.i guess its a way to drive up the price of this collection.i would like to add that the cd is remastered and i am hearing some of these songs for the first in 20 or so years and to hear Telma sing I DONT KNOW YOU ANYMORE is really cool.i am even hearing sounds and instruments i never heard on my old record player, its like hearing these songs for the first time.the groups last Arista single SKYBIRD is not included??????but yet we are given an overture from their RAGTIME LP?also ,on the liner notes some of the dates are wrong!???i could have written them better.you would think that they would check these things first.the cd has a nice sound ,crisp and clean.b+
