Has neo-soul been around long enough to already have throwbacks? The ostentatiously named Musiq Soulchild seems to think so. The vibe on his debut album, Aijuswanaseing, feels an awful lot like the one D'Angelo first got folks all hot and sweaty with (way back in 1995, with the now-classic Brown Sugar). Musiq even liberally borrows from "Brown Sugar" on "L Is Gone," when he croons, "Skin caramel complexion/Lips chocolate brown" (D's version says "Skin is caramel with those cocoa eyes"). The 23-year-old newcomer is smart enough to have a couple of his musical predecessor's partners in his crew, like producer James Poyser and bassist Pino Palladino. They get some nice, laid-back grooves going on the sassy opening track, "Girl Next Door," and on "Speechless" with its sly, funky Stevie Wonder-style bounce. Despite their best intentions, however, the Philly native never manages to generate any real heat. He has a perfectly adequate croon (part Stevie, part Eric Benet, and of course, part D'Angelo), but it's his lack of lyrical prowess that does him in. Tossing off verbal gems such as "So I could be like Michael Jackson and enjoy myself / Cause what I want to do is make a tuna melt" and "Your body's banging like a 400SE" with complete sincerity, Musiq lets his ulterior motives show, which sabotages the sensitive-ladies'-man image he's obviously trying to cultivate. He leaves us hoping that he'll let someone else write the words for him next time. --Sylvia W. Chan

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soo distinctive but with some amazing songs! Buy it!.......2007-03-30

Bought this one for Girl Next Door... but all of the other songs on the album are superb... if I was to pick out a few favourites it would be Just Friends (which just makes me smile as it's just a guy wanting to get to know a girl) and Love (this one just blows me away every single time!) No doubt this should be a single!

Mary Go Round is very hypnotic and catchy... and Poparatzi is a heartfelt plea to discuss through an argument (down to earth and realistic - but with a romantic edge - love it!)

Musiq has such range and depth to his vocals - beautiful voice to listen to! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite.......2007-03-29

A native from Phiadelphia, I was able to see him perform at the Five Spot (Black Lily) and each time he tore down the walls. Each song on this album shows that he was hungry and aware of what he was able to bring to the music scene.

3 out of 5 stars Musiq Soulchild - Aijuswanaseing.......2007-01-30

Musiq Soulchild (A.K.A. Musiq, Taalib Johnson) debut album "Aijuswanaseing" (2000) is a solid release from a talented musician. After the introduction the Philadelphia singer opens up this release with a smooth cut in "Girl Next Door", Musiq and Ayana sing soulfully away in what turns out to be an excellent track. This is a feel good joint, with good replay value."You And Me" is about keeping a relationship going no matter what obstacles get in the way. Musiq keep things going well with another decent track in the single "Just Friends" (Sunny). Musiq then changes the scenario singing about losing a girl on "Mary Go Around" and reminisces on "143". Musiq provides an exceptional track while believing in "Love", and stating how the word is misused. The later part of the album has some skip material, though their are a few standouts. Musiq sings about avoiding a relationship with an under age girl on "Seventeen, while lacing the heartfelt "Popraratzi" with an addictive chorus asking for one more chance to make things right. Musiq Soulchild provides an enjoyable release with "Aijuwanaseing" (I Just Wanna Sing). 3.5.

Aijuswanaseing is an old school flavor for the new school generation. Musiq represents Philly at it's best..

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good Music.......2006-07-22

I grew up in the 70's and I loved the music of that era. Musiq's music gives me that same good feeling that 70's music does. He admits that he was influenced majorly by the music of the 70's. People try to compare him to D'Angelo, I don't know if that's so but if there are similarities, D'Angelo must have had the same influences. Musiq is Musiq! His music is the truth! I have all 3 of his cd's. When I go on trips, he's who I bring along for the ride. I've had the extreme pleasure to catch him in concert twice. The last time I interacted with him from the audience and asked him to sing a song and he honored me by doing so and giving me the shirt of his back afterwards. I was in hog heaven!
