Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Jacksons classics........2007-05-08

These songs really take me back in time when i was a very young man. I remember owning the Destiny album when it first hit the scene in 1978. And that lp was slammin'. These songs are right on point and i love every last one of them. This is a very fine collaboration from a legendary group.

1 out of 5 stars No Point!!.......2006-01-02

I don't care if this was the first Epic Records Jacksons compilation, it sucks and I'm sure glad I didn't buy it. The only execption is the extra ten seconds added on Enjoy Yourself. Different Kind Of Lady, Torture and Body (both minor pop hits) were missing but big deal, some of thier greatest B Sides were absent such as Blues Away, Push Me Away and Things I Do For You were worth being placed on the cd. All of their biggest hits on the Essentials are in their full lp versions which was ok (although I liked Can You Feel It's edited version from the video better). The live version of Don't Stop (not a Jacksons' song, MJ) was chopped up from the original 1981 recording. All of the Jacksons' original lps are still available on cd, but the boring Babyface produced 2300 Jackson St.(unless you can luck out on eBay). Just purchase all the original cds still in print, but the horrible Victory unless you are a real hardcore Michael Jackson fan. Its more bucks, but you will get all of the classics that were absent from the compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Essential But Not.......2005-09-14

The Jacksons are my favorite group - hands down. I admit, every track on here is essential to their charting singles. But these guys have plenty of other astonishing tracks that didn't hit the radio. One thing I must admit regarding this disc is that it is great that we finally get the full 8 minute version of the powerful "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)". Usually only the DESTINY album features it, while the hits compilations features the short 3 to 4 minute version.
All else aside, this disc is worth purchasing if you just want what made the charts, but if you want really great and timeless music, purchase all 5 or 6 of The Jacksons' discs and you're in for a musical gift.

5 out of 5 stars Big Fan of the Jackson 5.......2005-08-12

I have been a fan of the Jackson 5 since I was a young child. Their music is timeless and sounds as good today as it did back in the 70's.

2 out of 5 stars Far from being "Essential.".......2005-07-11

From 1976 to 1989, the Jacksons released six studio albums and one live album. This album, THE ESSENTIAL JACKSONS, is their first prominent Greatest Hits compiliation. Unfortunately, it fails to provide a satisfying overview of the group's stellar career.

The main problem with this collection is that some of the truly great Jacksons' songs are missing, such as "Style Of Life" "Blues Away" "Think Happy" "Push Me Away" "Destiny" "Your Ways" "Wondering Who" "Body" and "Wait." Also, the song "Time Out For The Burglar" which was a single from the Whoopi Goldberg movie is nowhere to be found.

Instead, we find a watered down "catalogue" of the Jacksons' discography, complete with a frightfully boring live version of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" as a filler. This collection should have been 2 CDs like the other "Essential" releases. There certainly is plenty of worthy material from which to choose.

Solution? Buy all of the Jacksons' albums. You may pay more, but you will enjoy them for many many years, unlike this waste of money, which may not last the trip home from the music store.
