Teena's Still Got Plenty In Her Trick Bag.......2007-03-19
I can only imagine that after the exotic funk and jazz experimentation of 'Emerald City' Teena Marie really was looking to bring her commercial standing back up to snuff a litte. But how would she do that without appearing like a souless sellout?Well by not becomming one of course and releasing 'Naked To The World'.As with all of her Epic recordings this album is very highly produced and high tech. This features a lot of drum machines and digital synthesizers that were very typical of the era.But rest assured Lady T doesn't just go willy nilly into the commercial landscape-she really has to be involved with the whole musical process. So even on "Trick Bag","Crocodile Tears" "Surrealistic Pillow" (not related to Jefferson Airplane)and "The Ball",the albums most commercial songs Teena adds enough organic funkiness and abscract flavor to the music. The tough edged "Call Me (I Got Yo Number)" features a welcomed reunion with former musical mentor Rick James and the pounding song brings out the best in both Rick and Teena and is a great uptempo duet. The reason this album will likely be remembered is for "Ooh La La",a very old fasioned soul ballad that draws the passion and richness out of Teena's voice and it is a wonderful songs-one her classics without a doubt. The title track is done in a very similar manner and only pales slightly in quality."The Once And Future Dream" is another Rick and Teena duet,a ballad that almost recreates their magic from "Fire And Desire" seven years earlier only this time, the production is very contemporary-echoeing the influence of Anita Baker more then Rick James. Now "Work It" returned Teena to hard funk ground with an aggresive, horn packed style and keeps it up until the song can't take it anymore and just stops.Sadly 'Naked To The World' represents Teena Marie on the cusp of ending her commercial peak but if that's the way it had to be,this was certainly a great way to dissappear and go out swinging.
BRAVO TEENA! YOU ROCK!.......2006-12-26
Jumaane again. Teena Marie is the most amazing singer around! I love her voice and her music!!! All of her albums are a must and i'm getting most of them as a Christmas present to myself! Go Teena!
She kicks up the album with Trick Bag and you're already taken in. How can you ignore that funky beat? I love it, I love it! Not a big fan of the Call me(I got yo Number) but it's listenable. Ooo La La La, her only number 1 on any billboard (should've had more) is an amazing song. Listen to the sample; it's amazing. Just try hitting those notes the way she does. And the long note while she's talking; one word: priceless. On the next song Crocodile Tears, you feel her emotion after being let down. She makes you want to sing along and tell whoever she's talking to
to keep on cryin those tears, we don't care. I won't bore you any longer, this album is simply stated as a must have. I'm only 14 and I've got it, you have to have it too!
Genius At Work.......2005-10-29
The most interesting aspect of Teena Marie's career has been her ability to balance her abstract and introspective side...with some of the most infectious grooves ever to be created.
Released in 1988, this album is on the the totally opposite side of the spectrum of it's predecessor "Emerald City". While the album certainly contains sci-fi moments (Most notably the brilliant "Surrealistic Pillow"), Teena seems to have made a concerted effort to compiled a collection of songs more in the direct R&B vein.
"Ooh La La La", Teena's smashing #1 single, is perhaps the most remembered track on this album. An ode to many of the classic soul songs of the 60s and 70s, "Ooh La La La" is irresistable. The other single that charted on the R&B Top 10 is the jazzy "Work It", dedicated to the Ohio Players, complete with an amazing trumpet solo (matched with Teena's infamous scatting).
Teena reunites with her mentor, Rick James, on two underrated tracks. The funky "Call Me (I Got Yo Number)" is another chronicle of their relationship, which at this point had only been speculated upon by the public. The romantic "Once & Future Dream" is the other duet. Why this track is not mentioned in the same sentance as "Fire & Desire" and "Happy" is beyond me. This is one of Teena's greatest lyrics ("If I swam so deep into the ocean/and found Atlantis and the kingdom of Neptune/Then I'd ive them both to you") and certainly a stellar performance from both her and Slick Rick.
The collaboration with Bernadette Cooper of Klymaxx ("Crocodile Tears") is one of the funkiest moments on the CD, along with the Rick James-inspired "The Ball" (written as a follow-up to his own "Jefferson Ball" from "Bustin Out of L Seven").
The album's title track is one of the most introspective tracks of Teena's career and is the perfect end cap for an incredibly well sculpted album.
A Fantastic Soulful Experience.......2005-01-27
This is one of my fave Teena Marie albums. It moves, seduces, entices and entrances. From the slick groove of Trick Bag to the seductive call of Ooo La La La to the urban dance funk of Surrealistic Pillow to the emotional wallop of Naked To The World, Teena does not miss a step on this full digital recording. This cd is a Masterpiece even by contemporary standards-especially by contemporary standards!!
