Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ray Ray is way underrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-14

This album goes in a different direction than instant vintage. It's got a more positive and upbeat feel to it. Instant Vintage has more of a laid back and realistic (lack of a better word) feel to it. Both albums are great and anything from him and tony tone toni are amazing but I really feel this one a little bit more than instant vintage. It's definitely a funky positive sound.

Favorite Tracks
1.) Detroit Girl (Haha Ray Ray your a fool)
2.) I Love Her (Classic perfect song)
3.) I want you back (way too good of a beat and teedra and him are a team)
4.) Chic (Real Funky)
5.) This One (So true about how you feel about someone)
6.) Ray Ray Theme (love the callabo)
7.) Rifle Love (Rifle shot bugs me a bit but I think it's creative)

Buy this mans cd's. He is a true artist.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2007-01-21

After an unnecessary intro, the album begins with the enjoyable groove of "Ray Ray Theme." The rest of the album is hit and miss. Some of the songs sound, well... thrown together. This project is somewhat self indulgent on Ray Ray's part. Saadiq does a social commentary on how "Grown Folks" need more help than the children these days. (Amen!) The weird metaphor of "Rifle Love" works somehow, and is a reunion of his two previous groups. "I Know Shuggie Otis" is great, too. (If Raphael insisted on the blaxploitation theme, it should have continued throughout. The little story in the liner notes is entertaining, though.) So overall, this album is a little above average. It is cool and enjoyable overall. I would recommend buying it, but it's nothing to rush to the store for.

4 out of 5 stars Kankake Fan.......2006-04-23

I have a fan since Toni Toni Tone, days and i am still following Raphael as a solo artist. I have all his solo CDs as a solo artist and Ray Ray ranks the best on my list. Although the CD was hot I hope his next CD can include more slow cuts.

3 out of 5 stars Average But Decent.......2006-04-19

This release is typical Rafael Saddiq style which includes the heavy bass licks, DJ QUIK produced-like beats with various instruments including strings. Not sure where he was going with the "Ray Ray" Blacksploitation theme, but it didn't seem consistent throughout the album. There was one marginal attempt to evoke a Mayfield type of sound. For the most part, after one listen I'd say 50% of the lackluster album are true hits, the rest is filler. Most Toni Tone Tony - Lucy Pearl -Saddiq fans will pick this up in a heartbeat but may be a tad disappointed. All said, this doesn't touch "Instant Vintage". Since I am a big TTT-Saddiq fan, this listening experience won't sway me from buying anymore of their releases. R. Saddiq is a true musical giant.

4 out of 5 stars ALMOST AN INSTANT VINTAGE!.......2005-12-08

Saadiq, known as the Father of Neo Soul, has a cool theme/idea with the Blaxploitation poster for the album cover and intro. "Rifle Love" is pretty catchy but then again, that damn shotgun starts to irk me after the 4th time I hear it. "Chic" is a cool and has that Slave sound to it. "Detroit Girl" has that vintage Saadiq pop to it. "This One" sounds lifted straight from the Lucy Pearl recordings and it bangs. The poppin' "Chick Like You" gets thangs jumpin' as well. "I Know Shuggie Otis" has a Prince vibe to it. "Grown Folks" is straight form a Curtis Mayfield album, with the social conscious vibe to it and all. This is almost as good as Instant Vintage and it may end up being better as time goes by.
