The 1974 Caught Up was Millie Jackson's breakthrough, a soul opera about infidelity with Jackson playing the "other woman" on one side-long suite, punctuated with an extended, down-and-dirty rap, and the wronged wife on the other. With the Muscle Shoals rhythm section's rippling pulse and slick, protodisco orchestrations backing up Jackson's histrionic but sensitive readings of a string of cheating-song covers (plus some originals that advance the plot), this was as high-concept as '70s soul got, and it's kept its savage emotional force even as its style dates it. This reissue couples it with the 1975 sequel Still Caught Up, which forces the narrative a little (it ends with the mistress going insane and being hauled away!) but spawned the hit "Leftovers." --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a sho nuff soul masterpiece........2007-05-05

Millie Jackson definitely put it down on these two recordings. I really loved all of the songs on this disc. This may well be her best recording along with the other title "Feelin' Bitchy". If you're any kind of fan of this lady's, then you should have this title in your collection. I'm still laughing and enjoying it.

One of her best !!

5 out of 5 stars Play on "repeat" for days at a time!.......2006-12-02

Like a great Joan Crawford movie, this album grows in stature the more times you expose yourself to it's loopy logic and hyperactive emotionalism. It is GREAT music, as beautifully produced as anything from the 1970s. It's stuffed with drama and melodrama- child, they drag somebody off IN A STAIGHTJACKET at the end of this soap opera! There are truly adult situations and some great filthy gags. There are two foolish women, in love with the same cheating man, grappling for a little bit of happiness with violins, electric guitars and some great horns. Sure chortle about "that'd make us wife-in-laws!" but the beauty of the music and the real humanity of the characters will hold your attention for many, many hours. A TREASURE!

5 out of 5 stars My mom loved it!.......2006-07-15

2 out of 5 stars Two Great Albums on One CD [2 & 1/2 stars for re-issue].......2005-02-23

This could have been a great re-issue if some additional songs were included: b-sides, single versions, remixes, live recordings, etc (maybe a bonus CD or DVD). Still, this is a nice album to have, despite how much it overlaps with Millie's "Totally Unrestricted!" anthology. It is a concept album: it plays like a musical; each song is about the same relationship(s) and mixes into the next track. Millie sings from the perspectives of both the wife and the mistress (or the girlfriend and the "other woman" that he married, depending on one's point-of-view). "Making the Best of a Bad Situation", "Tell Her It's Over", and "I Still Love You (You Still Love Me)" are must-haves for Millie fans.
