Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ruth at her soulful best!.......2001-07-20

This CD was my introduction to Ruth Brown (excepting her appearance w/ Charles Brown on Bonnie Raitt's "Road Tested" album). I have to say that this is more of the typically solid fare that she's recorded over the last 12 years. It starts off with a fun "That Train Don't Stop Here Anymore" and continues with a duet with Bonnie Raitt on Louis Jordan's "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town." Both songs are reminiscent of the jump blues sides of her '50s heydey, but with a touch of New Orleans jazz (the album was recorded in the Crescent City, with a clutch of Big Easy jazz musicians, among them Delfeayo Marsalis). She sings gutbucket ballads, too, with "Sold My Heart to the Junkman" and "Love Letters" being standouts there. I also loved her duet with Johnny Adams on "I Don't Know." All in all, I would say that this showcases Ruth Brown in a soulful, New Orleans blues & jazz setting, which makes it a delightful departure from some of the other things she's done. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars broke the mold with this one!!............1999-04-09

Ever since i heard Ruth Brown sing a song with the words, "If I can't sell it, I might as well sit on it" I was hooked to this womens sensibilities and unshakeable determination as a performer. Listening to this collection of songs gives you a good idea of what a true pioneer and talent Ruth Brown still is. From the opening track of sing-talk swagger to Love Letter, to the bad mama blues with Bonnie Raitt she not only entertains but reminds us all how few of these performers are left. Lots of great music and singing on this exceptional album.
