Luther Vandross is a much underrated songwriter, a master at capturing the moment in a possible romance when things can go either way. Nonetheless, the loudest applause at his concerts is usually reserved for his interpretations of Leon Russell's "Superstar," Stevie Wonder's "Creepin'" and Bacharach & David's "A House Is Not a Home." For fans who prefer to hear Vandross interpreting standards, the singer has devoted Songs to nothing but material by other writers. The singing is every bit as sumptuous as might be expected, but the song choices are a bit peculiar. Vandross draws not from the great "American Songbook" composers like George Gershwin and Duke Ellington nor from the great soul-music composers like Smokey Robinson and Curtis Mayfield but from the melodramatic, overblown field of the pop-soul crossover hit. One can sympathize with Vandross' desperation for a big pop hit, for he is long overdue, but he ends up betraying his best qualities on this project. --Geoffrey Himes

The impossible Dream.......2006-11-05
I like this song because in life you can always dream and there's no height that's unatainable if that's your desire. I love this song.
Still Always & Forever.......2006-09-02
There are often so many acts these days, trying to make cover records, and songs their own. Although many have successfully made good records recently like Rod Stewart with his Great American Songbook series, or Barry Manilow did with his Greatest Songs Of The Fifties record, most of them haven't been successful. That is not the case for the late Luther Vandross. Since his career began in the 80's, he had definitively made some of the most beautiful cover songs ever like The Closer I Get To You, and If This World Were Mine. But what he did to showcase his cover style, still remains definitive.
Luther Vandross's 1994 record, Songs, is a well-organized and detailed cover album that really showcases Luther and his soulful warmth with cover songs that he was not only able to make is own, he made them a ecstasy for a generation. The album and the songs range well from clasic soul ballads like Heatwave's Always & Forever, the soulful Going In Circles, to more current 80's and 90's covers that are just breathtaking like his rendiditons of Lionel Richie's Hello and Endless Love with Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston's 1990 hit All The Woman I Need. Luther and his voice were just so exviting here, that it still puts the feeling of covers albums today to shame.
It still remains sad that Luther died last year, but the music he had recorded still not only continues to shine, just remains as one of the most soultry artists of our time. Songs is truly a must buy for die hard Luther Vandross fans, as well as anybody who doesn't own a Luther album yet. This album still lets you know Luther Vandross will remain Always & Forever.

What can you say about LUTHER besides "smooth", incredible in any language. The world has lost a great artist, vocalist, doctor of love. No one can replace him, his style is unique, he can transport you, make you think, make you dig deep within and sometimes make you cry. Like all his previous cd's, its a must have. Good bye my songster, you will be missed.
LUTHER CAN SURE NUFF SING, CAN'T HE???.......2005-07-15
Luther is a great vocalist!! The proof of that is his cover of Dionne Warwick's "What The World Needs Now" and "The Impossible Dream".
If You haven't already, find this CD and buy just for those two tracks. Keep in mind, you'll love his version of "Reflections" and others. But, the clear star of this cd (for me, at least) is "What The World Needs Now"
I MISS YOU ALREADY LUTHER!!!!!
Great R&B!.......2005-02-27
Luther Vandross had a handful of hit songs since 1981 and here is a collection of covers that every R&B fan will enjoy. One Top 20 hit from this album is a cover of Lionel Richie's ENDLESS LOVE. Vandross is joined by Mariah Carey on the song that was first made famous by Richie and Diana Ross. I incorrectly said "duets" when I mentioned this album for my review of Carey's GREATEST HITS album. Great album, though.
