On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet's much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
Maybe her greatest work ever..........2007-05-01
From the beginning of the cd to the end, great music. This is probably my favorite era ever of Janet. I just love this cd and the japanese version has two of her best songs... "I'm here" and "Put your hands on". This woman is just getting started and if you don't have this... you're missing out. Tracks I love: Spending time with you/ SloLove/ Truly/ Moist/ Sexhibition/ Like you don't love me/ Put your hands on/ I'm here/ Island Life.
MAKE SURE YOU PLAY IT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Skip this one, unless you want music to fall to sleep by.......2007-01-26
This is primarily an album of R&B lite and "Slow Jam" music. While there are a couple semi decent songs, this is not an album to grove or dance to. To be frank, I found it boring and a waste of Janet's time, an anyone (else's time) looking foreward an "Old School" jam. My adice is to listen to "Control", "Rythym Nation","Janet", "The Velvet Rope" or "All For You" until Janet's next album after "YO 20" comes out. Lots of "old School" Janet fans, such as myself, have also skipped "YO 20."
goodness gracious.......2006-12-31
some of the songs on here are really good and fit right in with the r&b and hip hop of 2004, but thanks to superbowl janet was boycotted everywhere. If she hadn't performed with that cracker justin timberlake she would have been all over the place like she deserved to be, but her bad choices led to her downfall and she still hasn't recovered from it, AT ALL.
SHE NEEDS TO STOP NOW!!!.......2006-10-28
After the last CD, I felt she was really trying to hard to be sexy.
This DJ junk is nothing more than Adult Entertainment on CD. And as far as the so-called "worbdrove malfunction" at the Super Bowl? Please!!!
It was all plan JJ, just in time for this DJ mess and you know it. Hell!! You've been busting out with your chest open since the 1990 MTV music awards ever since. JJ you are 40 years old now, your sex goddess days, when you were in your 20's are over!!! Stop with the sex pot act, get some class and taste back. Or for that matter, you seriously need to mature your image and sound.
it's just ok.......2006-10-19
I have days when I can't stand this CD as a whole and other days when I can't. The songs I do love are really awesome though. Spending Time With You is soulful r&b, reminding me a bit of mj's butterflies song; all nite don't stop sounds like if and has an awesome dance video, i want you has nice r&b music even if her vocals aren't the best on it, thinkin bout my ex has nice guitars and just a litte while also has a great guitar hook and melody.. Although songs like sexhibition, strawberry bounce, like you don't love me aren't bad, they don't hold up on their own very well. And don't get me started on slolove and my baby, those songs are alright for soemone else but don't really suit janet at all. The song I'm Here which was a bonus track on the japanese version, and the jusblaze remix of 'little while' should have been album cuts cause they're really strong and then people would still be feeling janet. Don't shy away from her though at all, 20 Y.O. is a much better album. I can listen to the whole thing without skipping, and the songs have strong melodies and hooks with nice vocals that suit the music; for the most part. I know a lot of people weren't feeling call on me and so excited, but the rest of the album is nothing like those tunes.
