Michael Jackson's <I>Thriller is the bestselling album of all time, with 45 million worldwide sales powered by seven Top 10 U.S. singles and eight Grammy Awards. The 1982 album was also a success from which the pop superstar never really recovered--subsequent albums seemed to have no other goal than to beat the records set by <I>Thriller. The highly-polished sound of Quincy Jones's production sounds almost organic compared to Jackson's more recent work, and in the same regard, <I>Thriller was significantly slicker than its predecessor, <I>Off the Wall. Both albums established a Jackson style that aimed for the dance floor with songs built on a state-of-the-art bed of percussion and keyboards. Elements of milestone <I>Thriller tracks like "Billie Jean" (arguably Jackson's best-ever performance) and "Beat It" (with its hard-rock solo by guitarist Eddie Van Halen) influenced not just Jackson's records, but those of the entire dance-pop world. On the song "Thriller," Jackson indulged his taste for the juvenile and invited Vincent Price to rap in a really scary voice. With <I>Thriller the album, Jackson created a different kind of monster--a hit album of such magnitude that it would have an irrevocable impact not just on the singer's art, but on his altogether kooky life. --John Milward</I>
Customer Reviews:
not multi-channel audio.......2007-05-12
This is not a review of the music itself, but just a comment on the SACD version of the album. I had this album on analog cassette tape way back when, and always wanted a CD version. When I saw that there was now an SACD encoded version, I immediated added it to my cart, thinking that it may have been re-mixed as multi-channel audio (like Dark Side of the Moon and Brothers in Arms had been). I guess I should have done my homework, since it wasn't. This album is in SACD format, but only as 2-channel stereo. I probably shouldn't have paid extra money to get this.
With Quincy Jones..........2007-03-25
at the production helm, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and "Off the Wall" are two of the best pop albums of the 20th century. I don't need to say anything about the music. Everyone around the world has heard it...and so many have loved it. I still love it. Quincy Jones was such a great producer and teaming with Jackson on those two albums was a golden combo.
michael is amazing legend.......2006-12-31
i don't get tired of this and the video of billie jean was koncout na d the rap in thriller what creativy i think that people shouldn't judge of his action but of the music he makes. i think that people should appreciate the music in this generation.
Jacko is Whacko.......2006-12-09
These were the days when Michael Jackson was wholesome and innocent, and black, not some bleached skin [...]. Nevertheless, this is still the biggest selling album of all time, and Michael Jackson is a controversial celebrity. Billy Jean Beat it and the title track are highlights on a dated album that brings back memories of the 1980s like they were yesterday. The videos for Beat it, Billy Jean and Thriller were staples on MTV through most of the 90s. You can't really dock Michael Jackson- he's out of the spotlight dealings have been well documented. Now that it's years later I can appreciate this album as good music while the rest of his albums dated even worse.
Arguably the most thoroughly (and repeatedly) listenable album ever.......2006-11-06
What more can be said about this album? Every song is worth hearing so many times that it's just nearly impossible to get tired of it. SEVEN of its 9 songs charted at number 10 or better, and even "Baby Be Mine" was getting a fair amount of airplay well over a year after the album was released. Personally, though, my favorite song from the album is "PYT" even though songs like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" were more successful. Even if he comes to be regarded as the strangest person ever to walk the earth, this album should still be treated like royalty.
