4 out of 5 stars Stellar.......2003-09-18

I have worn out the original CD. Every song on this CD is well worth the price. The music is different than any of his previous CD's. This tops my list of all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars This is one where you'll have to buy several copies........2002-09-20

Finally, not only something you'll want to own, but the perfect gift for Kwanza, Christmas, Eid or Channukah. Ever try to find the perfect gift for the friend who's finding his/her African roots? Well this is it.
The performances are stunning, the English, Afrikaans and Ki Swahili are perfect {I assume that the Zulu is also perfect}.
The performance of Nkosi Sikelele Africa, or Shosholoza are worth the price of the album.
Do your self a favour and buy this one. Give it to friends.
This is African music like you've never heard it . . . and it is beautiful . . . you don't need a PhD in Anthropology to love this one.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Lotti CD.......2001-09-19

This CD is my favorite of Helmut Lotti's. I have all of his CDs and a video of his. This is my favorite because I enjoy African music and his renditions are superb. His voice range is like noone else's. He has become my favorite singer even over and above Elvis who was my favorite for so many years. This CD even has a couple of songs that I remember from my younger days as a Girl Scout. I hope more of his CDs and videos come out soon.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Original Perspectives.......2001-07-30

I admire Helmut Lotti not only for his very kind manner and thrilling, emotional voice, but also for his sheer musical fearlessness. Our multi-lingual hero has always demonstrated a truly remarkable affinity for apparently every Romance Language there is, but here he stretches even further, forging bravely and admirably into such phonetic minefields as Swahili and Zulu...and some of those songs go by at a very good clip, I might add!

The fact that Helmut chose to undertake such a project at all evidences an innovative spirit and a true interest in and respect for the African culture. He must have invested many hours in background research, linguistic coaching, and writing the additional English lyrics and music.

Let me proactively address those who might be indecisive about or even critical of this CD, wondering: "How dare a European record African songs? And he doesn't remain strictly faithful to the original versions." The answer: this was never meant to be an "indigenous" recording. Enjoy this album for what it is: a collection of original and accessible interpretations of great music, conceived with respect and research, and expanded into lush and beautiful arrangements, incorporating not only the solo voice but also vocal ensemble and orchestra.

For those (such as myself - I'm half Nigerian) not intimately familiar with South Africa's culture, this is an enjoyable introduction to some of the country's popular melodies. I recently re-watched a favorite old video, Paul Simon's GRACELAND, and was thrilled to now recognize some of the songs so marvelously (and more "traditionally") rendered by Miriam Makeba...and straightaway purchased her wonderful "Africa [Live]" collection. For those more knowledgeable from the outset, abandon yourself to the enjoyment of a magnificent male voice and a first-rate chorus and symphony, and rejoice in the fact that these songs continue to inspire people around the world to embrace them in their own way, and that they are being brought to a wider audience.

In addition, the sound production is of Piet Roelen's usual top-flight caliber. "Out of Africa" truly holds many pleasures. If the import price -- which really isn't that bad -- gives you pause, then save up for it, try Amazon Auctions, buy it from an international retailer (this can actually be cheaper), or put it on your Wish List and then e-mail everyone you've ever known. Bravo, Helmut.
