What a hidden gem! The music is beautiful and not well known. This is a wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars October Project Video.......2007-03-09

It has been quite a few years now since I witnessed October Project make their 'Bury My Lovely' video in the loft of a friend's barn in Carnation, WA. They worked tirelessly until around midnight in the darkness with limited lighting from the spots on the set and from the kleigs outside the barn windows illuminating smoke effects generated from a tiny box. It was the first time I had heard the group, and the music was completely spellbinding to me....even after multiple takes to try to achieve just the desired effect. Finally, the group wrapped up the evening and preceded them down the dark barn stairs. I was afraid some of them might fall, so I offered my hand to lead the way. Mary Fahl took my hand, and we descended the stairs of the 100-year-old barn together. The spell that she cast on me then continues to this day. Her incredible haunting contralto voice, her presence in the black trenchcoat and (then) dark hair, her ability to transform the lyrics of Julie and Emil into music magic, and that moment when I actually touched her hand....all of it is embedded in my soul. The other reviews here are absolutely correct about the poignancy of this group's first album. Whatever caused the dissolution of this group, it is a shame and a heartache for the rest of us. One can only hope they will reunite.

5 out of 5 stars the best cd ever for be the first........2007-01-11

this cd is their first best no question about it.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Group and CD.......2007-01-10

October Project will forever be my most favorite music group. I am saddened that they disbanded. Julie Flanders lyrics are incredibly beautiful. Mary Fahl's and Marina Belica's voices compliment one another perfectly. I am a huge fan of Mary Fahl as her voice is hauntingly beautiful. I haven't found anyone who even compares. Thank you for the music!

5 out of 5 stars 365 Days of October.......2006-09-02

My first intersection with the October Project came when I was riveted by Mary's performance of "Going Home," playing as the opening credits of the so-so Civil War movie "Gods and Generals" unrolled in the theater. What a great voice! What a moving song! At that point I'd never heard of lead singer Mary Fahl or the OP.

Even with that big intro, I didn't hook up with October Project until I got internet (and Amazon) and found OP in my "recommended for you" section, with me databased apparently as someone self-identified as owning the G&G soundtrack (Randy Edelman's orchestral scores are also quite stirring).

SO THEN: after several weeks of absorbing both "October Project" and "Falling Farther In" I'm glad to give my enthusiastic endorsement to both.

WARNING: the NPR quotient is high here. This is deliberate, mannered, highly polished "adult contemporary" (I almost hate to use that label) music made by college music majors who have surely spent considerable time commiserating with each other over double mocha lattes in trendy cafes as the sunlight dances prisms of glory from their rainbow hair. It's Paul and Artie swooning again, this time with the estrogen ascendent. But let me not begrudge them their pretensions more than I already have, because the quality of their work surely does transcend its overprivileged origins. Skillful and sincere artistry will always "crossover" to minds and hearts receptive enough to share the human experience being related. And so it is with their debut CD "October Project..."

I do not know the provenance of their band name "October Project," but it is appropriate for the chilly, existential riot-of-perishing-color their sound & introspective lyrics do evoke. Lead vocalist Mary Fahl clearly knows her stuff and probably won her frontperson spot in the band over equally good singer Marina Belica on the strength of Mary's commanding personality and willowy fashion-model looks. Nevertheless they harmonize with piercing consonance, as best exemplified by "Eyes of Mercy," to my ears the stand-out track of OP #1, with its ethereal harmonizing and floating e-bowed guitar leads creating a miniature universe within the space of 3:35.

The rest of the CD is of equally high caliber, with the girls' voices melding gorgeously over 12 slices of Martha's Vineyard art-rock (I wouldn't quite call this "progressive"--no tricky meter shifts or wailing instrumental solos), which with repeated listenings has completely won me over.

Allow me just a moment's digression here to remark how fascinating it is to read other listener's reviews on Amazon. I am struck by the difference between those who first appraise song lyrics and other listeners (like me) who process lyrics only secondarily, or even later, after multiple listens have "opened up" a track to the point where the actual words of the song become meaningful.

I say if you're buying "October Project" spring for "Falling Further In" at the same time and get the full OP experience. "Falling" is an excellent second effort, in many ways superior to the debut album, and yes, we can only lament how the cruel vagaries of the music biz snuff great bands like this in favor of media whores like Brittney, Xtina, etc.

Mary's solo LP "The Other Side of Time" powerfully showcases her operatic, austere, schoolmarm's voice, but I question her choice of material (although the afformentioned "Going Home" is worth the price of the CD all by itself). I also have to ask, what's up with that cover photo of her? She's a beautiful woman--did she deliberately ask the photographer to make her look anemic and angry at the same time? If yes, the cover is a resounding success!

I'm awaiting the OP "reunion" CD from Amazon with the band slimmed down to a trio, Emil (pianist/songwriter), Julie (lyrics/vocal harmonies), and Marina (lead voice/keyboards) with great anticipation. Too bad the full band couldn't hang on for this reunion, but as with all other human endeavors, let's be grateful for the nickels time & circumstance will drop in our cups. I already like the "Abbey Road" style cover art and I'm confident the music will ring the same bells the first two releases did.

The OCTOBER PROJECT is good all year round and worthy of your attention & support.
