5 out of 5 stars Please support the Maggies.......2000-06-12

This is a great pop band from my town, and they are wonderful people who make great music. I would encourage any guitar pop fan to check them out.

5 out of 5 stars Power POP is back!.......2000-05-20

If you're looking for a great CD to purchase, look no futher! This CD is new and refreshing from begining to end. Nothing too complicated here, just great music. I could honestly tell you that I do not have a favorite track on the CD because they all are great. Give me The Posies straight up with a twist of R.E.M., great tunes with great harmonies. Also, a great CD to pick up is "Homesick" by this same great band. I am fortunate to live in the same area as these guys because they are great live as well. What more do you need to hear? Buy the cd's and check them out!

5 out of 5 stars maggies prove that pop will eat everything else too.......2000-05-18

I can't stop humming these songs all day and night. This album is more catching than Asian flu, and a lot more enjoyable. Seriously, buy both albums. After you've heard Cryptic Valentine you'll be starving for more of The Maggies' infectious tunes. Don't be caught short!

5 out of 5 stars "A well-mixed beverage of tunes".......2000-05-17

Listening to Cryptic Valentine, I sometimes feel like I'mexperiencing The Maggies for the first time (which is, fortunately, not the case). From the opening triple-threat of Nature's Afternoon, Long Dark See You and Sarah J. (which recalls, for me at least, Gun/Star/Wrong combo from the band's cassette-only and kinda old release Experimental Cinema), this album is a beautiful and entrancing sonic experience that fulfills the promise of the stellar album Homesick, building upon its angular-pop and adding some real dimension to the music. If you can recover from the first three songs (or stop dancing frenetically long enough to listen), old favorite Solid Yellow Zero makes a sparkling appearance (in its fifth (?) and greatest recorded form. But to pick out a single song or singule musician's contribution would be futile. While the songs (by Philip Price, vocals/guitars/keys/Mellotron) are king, the band - (Price, bassist Max Germer, vocalist/keyboardist Adrain O'Carolan and drummer Stuart Wright - meshes beautifully as one to deliver them. If the term "pop band" (a tag often applied to the Maggies) scares you, know this: this is music we can all enjoy, a bright and fresh tasting, well-mixed beverage that recalls the best of rock, country, psycedelia AND power-pop. If that isn't enough, the "chaser" of Dead Jones promises to kick your( ) into next week. It's a weird song, but indescribable and beautiful. You just have to hear it. Buy this album and do yourself a HUGE favor END
