Customer Reviews:
Old music, fun listening........2007-02-11
In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.
Social Studies teachers; take note!.......2006-08-11
It may be, and it may not be, the most important year in the 20th century! 1907 was a time when people throughout america were suffering from a serious depression that almost caused america's monetary foundation to go down the tubes. People were sorry, and thus, some of the records contained are both sentimental, and reflective of what was going on. Byron G. Harlan, for instance, cut some exquisitely Sentimental records in 1907, two of which were "School Days" and "Nobody's Little Girl". He has caused phonograph listeners to shed many a tear! But even though Harlan was more sorry than any other pioneer recording artist, he evidently Brightened up enough to sing loud and raucous records in his partnership with Arthur Collins, some of which will shock many listeners today. ("Bake dat Chicken Pie", and "Camp Meetin' Time" were among these records cut by Collins and Harlan, and were also part of a musical fad known as "C**n Songs"). But a little word of warning is that Two of these fragile records known as "C**n Songs" contain a STRONG racial epithet, the "N-Word", hence the format, "Explicit Lyrics". the other one of which i speak, is the TERRIBLY uncouth record cut by May Irwin, "the bully", which contains a ballad about a notorious "Razor-totin' N****r". however, in spite of all i just said, what people must realize is that this is an indispensable teaching tool for social-studies teachers, because it teaches about the depression of 1907, and it also covers some of the viewpoints, and atitudes towards people of the other race. This is a wonderful record, and must always be used to educate and inform!
