Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent last album.......2007-03-25

George Harrison's premature death due to cancer was a great loss to the music world. The lyrics of his last album (CD) is full of thoughts related to his Buddhism believes of transcendence, and show his strong link to this religion. I believe this album shows a man that has not only accepted his fate, but also points to the fact that this life is only temporary. This is certainly one of, if not the best, of his albums. Every song is great, and the lyrics are superb. This is a must have album for fans of George Harrison, and for anyone that wants a great album (CD) that shows the talent of this great artist.

5 out of 5 stars "Give me plenty of that guitar!".......2007-02-23

I've been "The Beatles"' fan since my early teenage years. After the "Fab Four" went their separate ways, I've come from admiring Paul McCartney the most to John Lennon and then, I discovered George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" and he's been the God for me since. The Quiet Beatle, "the Dark Horse" with his voice, his lyrics, his melodies, and his distinctive slide guitar style which "attracts me like no other" musician - I can't even describe what his guitar does to me. Listening to the favorite songs where George's guitar gently weeps, smiles, meditates, and talks to me personally makes me feel like standing by the ocean during the warm sunny spring day. The vibrating flowing sounds of his chords break down to the thousands golden patches of sunlight that reflect from the water surface and radiate in the air filling it with magic glow. This glow seems to reach my very soul bringing serene joy or bright sorrow.

"Brainwashed", sadly George Harrison's posthumous project is an excellent album with all 12 songs warm, sparkling, and melodious, some of them have been among my all time favorites since I bought the CD when it was first released: "Rising Sun", "Marwa Blues", "Never Get Over You", the opening song "Any Road", and of course, the one which gave the album its title, "Brainwashed". I have not listened to the CD for some time and I have been re-discovering it for the last few days. I can't get enough of it. I keep listening to the songs in my car, on my way to work and back and since it takes me 40-45 minutes of driving one way, I am able to enjoy the favorite songs over and over again. They are the songs about love, about the roads that take you anywhere, the journey of self-discovery, the look at the past and sorrow of losses - everything is in George's last album, his parting gift to us, to me. It is his last smile at the sun that he worshipped and his quiet and dignified acceptance of inevitable end, and knowledge that "The soul does not love. It is love itself/It does not exist. It is existence/It does not know. It is knowledge itself."

"Brainwashed" is one of the best albums of my favorite musician whose guitar will never stop gently talking to me.

5 out of 5 stars Namasté George.......2007-02-17

George Harrison's BRAINWASHED is a remarkable accomplishment, especially in light of his personal circumstances during these sessions. This is an album that will not be forgotten any time soon. Mature introspection, melodic playfulness and anguish, humor and pain-- the stuff of life. It's all here, in what amounts to a brilliant musical summation, lovingly given to all. A profound final work. Highest recommendation.

2 out of 5 stars George In Evident Decline.......2007-01-27

Love the Beatles since childhood, of course John and Paul solo, even the occasional Ringo, but George always will have a special place as the unappreciated and vastly under-rated 3rd musical genius of the group. In many ways George was deeper on a spiritual and emotional level, which I believe was best reflected in his music and ability, all the while continuing to stay in the backdrop of Lennon-McCartney. I think both John and Paul consciously and unwittingly each burned this man to their own detriment. I think Paul realized this a bit too late, sadly, and may also regret not having spent a fraction of the time he used up in his downturn periods with John.

I have most of George's work on vinyl, cassette and CD, and my spouse and kids are very well aquainted with the majority of his work, whether they know the titles or not. I was very saddened by his passing, and of course wistful as I had been with John's passing - because I knew we were being "robbed" again of what might still have been to come. So I just had to get his last release, placing it ahead of anything else that might be on my musical wish list. It saddens me to say that I think George, of course knowing his condition and the inevitabile, likely just kind of let go. Maybe it just was a simple release from what he had previously wanted to accomplish, maybe he felt he had nothing left to prove (too true), or maybe he just wanted to express and vent - no frills. Maybe worse, he just didn't have it any more. For me though, it just wasn't the George that pierces the heart, mind and soul, that brings one to a deeper appreciation of how profound our relationships are and
what they should be or make us feel. This wasn't the same George, and I will miss him that much more.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely farewell.......2006-05-28

I purchased this album shortly after it was released and, unfortunately, only recently began to venture beyond the first few tracks. Better late than never. This is easily the best release by a former Beatle since the 70's. Brainwashed is certainly head and shoulders above McCartney's recent releases. I've long felt that George was vastly underrated in many ways: as a guitarist, as a songwriter and as a lyricist; fortunately his great skill in all of those areas are present in abundance on this great album, in particular his lyrics. Many of the songs on Brainwashed have simply brilliant lyrics that offer a glimpse into George's spiritual journey as it was coming to an end when this album was being written and recorded. Any Road, Pisces Fish, Rising Sun, and Stuck inside a Cloud stand out in my mind as being particularly poignant in light of George's search for divine truth and meaning. The adoration of peers and friends such as Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and the members of Monty Python, among others, that was shown in the film "Concert for George" (which I would also recommend) showed what a wonderful friend Harrison was to many. This album demonstrates the great talent he had to share with those who would listen--in the final analysis, George Harrison was truly comparable to the Lennon/McCartney juggernaut. Lennon once said:"George himself is no mystery, it's watching George discover himself that is so damn fascinating" Brainwashed is the final chapter of that discovery and it is every bit as rewarding as Lennon suggested.
