Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Of historical interest only.......2000-04-11

I am afraid that the reissue on CDs of the 1928 La Scala <La Boheme> (AB78 906/07) from Fono Enterprise, Italy on the Cedar label is of historical interest only. The tenor of Aristodemo Giorgini sounds weak and past its prime for the most part, and his Marcello (Ernesto Badini) has a heavy baritone that would qualify him more for a Colline than the young lover. Neither Rosina Torri's Mimi nor Thea Vitulli's Musetta are interesting as characters or more than adequate as singers. In fact, the only really satisfactory parts are the two old men sung here by a resonant Salvatore Baccaloni.

On the other hand, conductor Carlo Sabajno knows what he is about and conducts a nicely modulated performance, considering the demands of the 78 rpm side. So this is really for those who simply must have every version of this opera in their collection. The same company has available the 1938 Gigli/Albanese set that is somewhat better than this but still generally disappointing. Stick to Beecham and/or Toscanini sets for what "La Boheme" is all about.
