Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Miriam Gauci Exudes the Passion and Temperment of "TOSCA".......2000-11-21

When I first heard Miriam Gauci's recording of Puccini's "Tosca", done by the Sinfonica de Barcelona, I was astounded at her accuracy and vocal quality! Many sopranos attempt the passionate and dramatic role of "Tosca", but few with the exception of the Diva Maria Callas have ever truly mastered it. But I believe Gauci has done so credibly. She delivers the high vocal registers with ease, yet forcefullness. As Floria Tosca, she gives to us the picture of a highly religious woman passionately in love with the political rebel Mario Cavarodossi, also sung beautifully by Spanish tenor Giacomo Aragall. Puccini's opera premiered in Rome in January 1900 under extreme political upheaval in Italy at the time, which was under the Monach Umberto I. The country was in transition and the characters in the opera represent the monachy and the republican party at odds with each other. Floria Tosca is the object that mediates the controversy, although she becomes very caught in the middle of it. Gauci sings a convincingly accurate "Vissi D'arte" in Act II and builds up the passion and strength to kill the evil Scarpia (representing the monarchy) who tries to seduce her and learn of Cavarodossi's hiding place. She believes she has secured the lovers exit out of Rome. Wrong! Aragall delivers an effective "E lucevan le stelle" from his jail cell in Act III. This budget priced complete opera recording is a true "find" and should be compared with other great recordings of "Tosca". Alexander Rahbari conducts the Orchestra Sinfonica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya as the late maestro Puccini intended, with gusto and passion. I highly recommend this 1996 recording for those lovers of Puccini and the verismo style!
