Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it.......2006-11-17

First a caution: this recording derives from copies made of a live radio broadcast from 1951, so expect less than ideal sound. That said, it really isn't all that bad; though worse than standard early 50's mono, you can hear all the details of the performance, and be able to appreciate the performance for what it is: extraordinary.
First and most obvious, the cast is out of this world excellent, easily the best on any recording I've heard. Especially worthy of praise is Seefried, who captures just the right balance of strength and feminine tenderness in the difficult role of Pamina. In addition to great singing, she genuinely acts out the dialogue, rather than just going through the motions. Dermota was born to play Tamino; it's like you're hearing the character, not someone singing the part. He is so good he even beats the great Wunderlich in this role. I'm increasingly convinced which Queen of the Night you prefer is a matter of personal taste. For me, Lipp is just about ideal, with impressive accuracy and agility as well as an appropriately icy, determined characterization. Every other role is superbly cast here.
Karajan used much the same forces in his studio recording, but whereas that is a very fine effort, this is a play to cleanse the soul. The catalyst in this is the incomparable conducting of Furtwangler. What he manages to do is use the widest range of tempi imaginable, from very swift to probing the limits of sustainable sound, to bring out all the varied elements of the opera, while so carefully plotting the progression from piece to piece that the whole appears as one pulsing organism. There is not one note where you don't sense complete commitment. Added to this the Philharmonic plays with great tenderness and warmth. Finally, you get the rare chance to experience this genuinely live, with almost all the original dialogue, applause, and stage noises that belong in the theater. And really, this is as it should be: Zauberflote isn't a concert piece, but a true Singspiel, meant to be enjoyed in the moment. Listen to the whole thing through if you can. Only one word of warning: there is no libretto, only a sketchy summary, so unless you speak German, you need to find it elsewhere.

Furt is Magic. I like this one very much. However the best i got is the Kemplerer's one (Lucia POPP is THE ULTIMATE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT according to my wife...).
