Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars They don't produce Pasquales like this anymore.......2003-05-29

I would have to agree with everything 'lesismore' says about Muti's production of "Don Pasquale." I hear nothing "leaden" in this recording as Mr. Dunphy claims, mainly because the tempi here is very fast. This is a purely Italian cast who understands the jokes here in an Italian manner -- pure Buffo. The cast here is so much better than American, English, French or Spanish singers of "Pasquale" on other labels, giving us beautiful Italian sung by Italians, conducted by Italians. Muti keeps the buffo, but also humanizes the characters rather than go hogwild with stereotypes. This definitely is the first recording of "Don Pasquale" to have in your collection.

2 out of 5 stars No Fun.......2002-01-08

While Riccardo Muti may be one of the premier Verdi conductors in the world today, the effervesence of this light Donizetti comedy almost completely eludes him. The score under his baton becomes quite leaden. He is not helped by the cast; Mirella Freni was past Norina at this point in her career and she wisely avoids high notes even though she does try to exhibit some of the character's personality. Gosta Winbergh is adequate as Ernesto while Leo Nucci's Malatesta tries to bring some life to the proceedings. Sesto Bruscantini is a surprise - his Pasquale is heavy-handed and lumbering: a definite comedown from his Cetra recording of the role 30 years earlier. All said, the champagne is quite flat here and it would be better to look elsewhere if you want to hear this opera with all the panache Donizetti intended.

5 out of 5 stars OPERA BUFFA AT ITS BEST.......2000-01-01

This is a superb performance of a jewel of an opera. Riccardo Muti's tempos are fast --- very fast, -- and from the overture onwards, the opera sprints along in a wonderful infectious way. There is a sense of joy in this performance that is largely absent in most performances (recorded or live) of this delightful operatic comedy. Muti keeps a very tight rein on his singers: although this is a bel canto opera (where elaborate vocal decorations and interpolated top notes are the norm), Muti does not permit his singers to indulge in any sort of vocal embellishments whatsoever. The endings of all arias and duets are revolved downwards ---- and climatic top notes are nowhere to be heard (even when the music seems to call out for them). Completely faithful to the written score, Muti follows Donizetti's intentions to the letter. But is Muti not aware of the fact that the bel canto composers like Donizetti (as well as Bellini and Rossini) actually expected singers to add vocal embellishments and interpolated top notes to the music ----- and that the relatively generic written endings leave options for the singer's choices of added vocal ornaments? Whatever the case, the original written endings are what we hear on this recording. Once past this, the singers are outstanding. Mirella Freni is a great Norina ----- a full lyric voice with good coloratura ----- and a delicious characterization. I rank this recording as one of her best. Gosta Winbergh's Ernesto is no less impressive --- the role could have been written for him. His lyric tenor is truly a beautiful and finely tuned instrument, and he exemplifies what bel canto singing is all about. Sesto Bruscantini is an endearing and vocally fluent Don Pasquale, and Leo Nucci is a convincing Dr. Malatesta. Both of them add a great sense of fun to the procedings. If one is looking for a recording of "Don Pasquale", this one would certainly qualify for the caliber of the performance as well as for the sheer standard of the singing. If one has a problem with the Muti practice of eschewing climatic top notes and vocal embellishments, they may feel a little frustrated by the non-climatic endings. Still, the performance is so good, and the conducting so vital, that the loss is quite negligible. Highly recommended.
