5 out of 5 stars Really wonderful.......2007-01-24

This is one of the most relaxing music from Zimmer. It's like hearing the music from your dreams in your player. It really takes you on a journey to really magical places. I can listen to this CD every time I like. This is once in a while masterpiece. I don't know when Zimmer will ever write something like this again.

4 out of 5 stars Nice ethereal stuff.......2006-09-13

A lot of string instrument stuff, but missing out a little bit on the big orchestra. Track 5 " Brother Morphine" is the best IMO. Overall this is a good CD, but not on the same level as Gladiator.

5 out of 5 stars Get it now!.......2004-08-23

Whether or not you liked the film, this score is one of Zimmer's forgotten treasures! It is beautifully written and performed. There is a combination of orchestra and synthesized sounds that blend seamlessly together. My favorite tracks are actually the first and last ones. Both tracks flourish into lush and moving orchestral melodies, although I have to say that the last track is slightly more moving. If you have seen the film, you may agree with this considering what takes place in the film. The score is pretty short, and the tracks are divided up slightly funny, but overall these things are minor drawbacks. If you come across this score (which can be somewhat tricky to find) pick it up! You won't be disappointed! Especially Zimmer fans!

5 out of 5 stars Moving, meditative, romantic vision of Burma.......2003-03-08

This CD transports me to another continent. I've had this CD for years and recently rediscovered it. Have been playing it as white noise as I work at the computer and plan to take it on a getaway w/my husband -- perfect for the drive, or better yet, in the hotel... One of the best movie soundtracks ever -- I'd put it [almost] up there w/the Godfather soundtrack in its ability to evoke visions of a culture or society -- and it sounds like a stand-alone instrumental rather than 'soundtracky' -- I'd love to see the movie but never have. I'd also love for Zimmer to write the score for a film on Latin America [esp colombia] with the same delicate ethnic flavor that he used in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Zimmer's Best work.......2002-06-29

This is one of my favourite Zimmer scores, the main theme is absolutely mesmerising. For fans of pure classical orchestral music Zimmers use of synthesizers can take some getting used to, at times I wish Zimmer would include pure string tracks of some of his more memorable film works as his ability to produce stunning themes is uncanny. On the whole this has a very exotic feel with its combined use of ethic pipes & wind instruments which puts one at ease. It is a melancholic yet uplifting score.

The action cues are pretty much the standard Zimmer fare and at times disrupt the mood of the score as a laid back pleasant experience. As many people have noted with this score the last self-titled track of this is worth the price of the CD alone.

I also recommend Zimmers House of the Spirits, another case of the score being so much more than the film.
