Customer Reviews:
Music and Image in Perfect Unison.......2000-11-22
If you are like me, then you have already seen the film GOHATTO. With that in mind, then purchasing this CD (though expensive it may be) is a necessary step in helping you keep the haunting images of the film fresh in your minds. Sakamoto's music for GOHATTO is nothing short of astounding. The score is both hypnotic and charged, minimalist and experimental, ice-cold, but with a heartbeat.... With that in mind, the music remains the perfect complement to the film by Nagisa Oshima. Naturally, one may ask oneself, "Why the heck should I spend up to $50 of my own money to purchase this CD, the movie for which hasn't even seen a wide theatrical release in the USA?" Good question. The answer is simply that Sakamoto has created a work that, while perfectly complementing the film, stands on its own two feet as music that can exist independent of its original intention as a movie soundtrack. Like his work for MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR LAWRENCE (also with Oshima), Sakamoto's GOHATTO score is based on simple synthesizer chords all surrounding a simple pulse for its rhythm. Instead of letting the music meander in this over-simplicity, however, Mr. Sakamoto uses unusual sounds, such as a wolf howl or a rattle, to create an eerie mood that can only suggest almost supernatural overtones. The result is not only a refreshing mixture of the calm and the creepy, it is also a masterful work of mood and tempo. This score not only does justice to the great film that is GOHATTO, it also serves to be yet another jewel in the Sakamoto Ryuichi crown.
Ryuichi Sakamoto's new album and Gohatto Soundtrack.......2000-08-20
Why I wish to buy this Soundtrack? I also don't know. May be just because I wish to see the movie--Gohatto (Taboo) too much, but I can't get this movie. I just only heard three parts/songs of it, it sounds very fantastic, it can bring out some feeling about mystery, what the whole movie wants to express. If I can imagine the movie through the musics, why can't you?
