Attencion PHPs, this is ESSENTIAL, if only..........2000-05-12

First of all let's dispense with the Mother Gong CD, which is rather [poor] in my opinion. What remains in this set are two extraordinary (yet completely different) albums, both of which should be essential to even the most discriminating Gong fans. I dismissed the Daevid Allen solo CD in my earlier review two years ago, but now that I have FINALLY given it a fair listen two years later, I have discovered it is an extraordinary album, and in my opinion the best Daevid Allen solo record I have heard. (Please refer to my review of the standalone disc on this website for more details.) And the YOU Remixed 2-CD set is a simply GLORIOUS reinterpretation of the band's classic album--particularly the first disc, which includes remixes of almost all of the songs from that album in their original order. The artists on this disc in particular are top-notch (The Orb, The Shamen), and they lovingly reinterpret the album with just enough fidelity to the original song structures to maintain the dramatic sweep and vision of the original YOU, while showcasing the modern remix techniques that are the spiritual spawn of Gong's space-rock vision. The result--a YOU for the New Millenium, a perfect marriage of Gong's instrumental and conceptual power with the abstract wonders of modern electronica. It has made me fall in love with YOU all over again, and my wife (who is younger and doesn't appreciate some of the dated aspects of the original) loves it too. If you are a Gong fan like me, you would have to be an idiot to pass this up, unless you already own the two select items. Otherwise, buy this CD set now (while supplies last)!

Nothing like Gong.......2000-01-27

This band was introduced to me weeks ago by a college professor, and what an experience this collection of songs is. This music is like Pink Floyd on mind expanding drugs. Listening to this selection of songs is a must for fans of "psychadelia."
