Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of guitar!.......2003-07-11

i got this cd secondhand from a friend who didn't like it. He got it thinking it was heavy metal and was disappointed. It's not H.M. but some of the songs do have a hard rock flavor. Being a big fan of improvised jazz and more fringe rock guitar, I really like it! The band is very weird and the sound quality of the recording isn't all that great but they really can play. Like one of the other reviewers said, these guys have a very unique sound and real potential. I recommend this cd to anybody who really likes wailing guitar and long jams. I give it four stars and hope they release another cd soon.

5 out of 5 stars Stop complaining, open your ears and minds!.......2003-01-21

If I had a penny for every time I've heard someone complain that there are just no great guitar bands around anymore, I'd be richer than Bill Gates. Come on people, think independent! That's where bands like Anubis Spire reside and they absolutely smoke! So shut up and put your money where your mouth is and buy this cd so these guys can put out many more. I think these guys are going places.

5 out of 5 stars NO Band even comes close! Beyond fast and tons O feeling!.......2002-07-12

I am short on time as usual but I had to add my two cents worth.
This band is a so GOOD ! Some of the best guitar playing ever!Deadly fast but melodic.Songs that are challenging but very catchy, mostly instrumental all great!!
The recording quality could be better but it is WELL worth getting. You will have a hard time keeping it out of your CD player. And a word to the wise,if you should lend it to a friend you better count on buying another copy because they will NOT want to give it back!! They are working on a new CD... It will be TOP Quality!!So hold on it's gonna be quite a ride!

GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT ! THANKS A.S.! Aloha!

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone........2001-12-02

Interesting album for the fan of the guitar music of the 70's and 80's bands like the mahavishnu orchest. and more obsure one's like FM and budgie. You've really got to like long jams to get into this though. I do, so I give this a solid 4 stars. --Phil M.

5 out of 5 stars A great debut!.......2001-11-21

Anubis Spire guitarist Bill MacKechnie is a bit of a myth and legend around the northeast and especially in New York. His unorthodox, scatter shot, over the top guitar playing coupled with his hatred of the music business and reclusive behavior have made him the "Syd Barrett of guitar" poster boy for some and a target of ridicule for others. With his band Anubis Spire he runs the gamet of styles and emotions that were always evident in his earlier work. It makes for a diverse, if uneven debut CD. From instrumental pieces to almost power ballads and guitar which one minute floats and the next burns, Bill is at his best when he slows down a bit to shake out some of his trademark stratospheric bends. Old Lions could easily have appealed to a larger audience if more care had been taken to make this a more solid showing. Of course then it would have probably lost most of it's raw honesty and charm. I think Anubis Spire has fashioned a CD that is, as they themselves have said, not for everyone. A good debut from a band that promises much more in the future.
