3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable collection of indie rock-pop.......2004-03-05

"All his heroes turned into junkies/all his dreams are ringing hollow" isn't exactly an upbeat start to an album. But it is a pretty good start to "When I Was You," a solid though unexceptional album by California indie pop-rock band Vagabond Lovers (also called Naked Barbies).

Kicking off with the melancholy pop "Junkie," Vagabond Lovers veers into different musical avenues. There's a bit of blues in the sad "For Sale Sign," some light rock (the no-communication ode "Living Independently," the slow-burning "Kitchen") and a dash of folk-rock ("A Thousand Different Reasons"). Most of it is pop, though ("Division Street" and a shrink's dream song, "I Got Killed").

Vagabond Lovers have a nice, smooth sound, your average guitar-and-percussion-pop with a clear, ethereal sound. The blues ballads are the most prominent (though not the strongest) numbers here, and the simple melodies make it easy to just sit back and drift away into one's own thoughts.

Patty Spiglanin's throaty vocals sound like a smoother version of Marianne Faithfull's, and it's hard not to wonder how she would sound with more musical complexity behind her. Her voice is certainly strong and unique enough for it. And the songs are a mixed bag. Sometimes the simplicity of the writing is a strength ("I Got Killed's" vaguely creepy allure), and sometimes it's a weakness (the mediocre "Wonderful Thing").

A nice listen for fans of indie pop, "When I Was You" sports some pleasant, easy melodies and everyday poems as lyrics. Not exceptional, but a good one to listen to in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Vagabond Lovers, aka the Naked Barbies.......2002-11-30

Because I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I have been fortunate to be able to see the Vagabond Lovers (better known by their former name and now renewed name Naked Barbies) live, for many years, from their very first show (I was one of only 8 people in the audience) through their latest shows. This album is great for people who live indie rock/pop on par with the Cowboy Junkies, my other favorite band. Every song is nicely done, my favorites being Junkie, Drive, and Living Independently.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2001-11-23

I too bought this CD on a whim..boy am I glad I did. I have been a fan of the Cowboy Junkies for awhile and if you like the Cowboy Junkies..you will love this. I play it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING!.......2001-05-13

I bought this CD after listening to it on a listening station, and have not stopped listening to it since.

The lead vocalist sounds a lot like Marianne Faithfull, the bands orchestration is top quality, along with the songs from beginning to end are out of this world for Folk Pop.

The standout songs are "Junkie" "I Got Killed" and "Kitchen.

Their remake of Everything But the Girls "Drive" is first rate, and put their own style and sound on the song making it their own.

A definite buy for the CD worthy collection. Too bad this group is not getting more notice.

5 out of 5 stars Why Aren't These Guys Famous?.......2000-07-20

Irresistible tunes and bluesy ballads, delivered with acrobatic soul by one of America's most mystifyingly undiscovered singers. What is it with the music industry, anyway? Why don't I get to hear Patty Spiglanin on the radio instead of another breathy Tori Amos croon? "Midnight Radio" and "Division Street" are instant classics; in fact there's not a dull number on this album. One of those rare CDs that I loved from the very first listening.
