Ecstatic.......1999-09-11
I was drawn to the album because I recognized his name from certain Loreena McKennitt albums. Quan's sound is similar to Loreena McKennitt's in that it melds the Middle Eastern, Celtic, and classical musical traditions. But Quan adds two new elements: Chinese music and jazz. The latter is evident in Quan's sparkling piano stylings, and the former is represented by the erhu and yang chin and by the very orientally-ininspired melodies.
I recommend these tracks: "Invocata" (I first heard it while driving through the redwoods; the pipe organ and percussion complimented perfectly the somber majesty and earthy sacredness of the forest), "The Dance of Life" (a Celtic reel in the McKennitt tradition of complimenting lively Irish melodies with Arabic dance rhythms) and "Journey of the Forgotten" (a spiritually exotic journey in the league of Loreena McKennitt's "Marrakesh Night Market" and "The Mystic's Dream"). However, they all are good, each in a startlingly different style -- Baroque hymn, Celtic aire, Arabic lamentation, joyful Indian raga, and any combination thereof -- and the list goes on. Mind you, this shouldn't be taken with the usual stereotypes associated with "New Age" music, which is an inadequate category for his music. It should be more "Global Jam Session." It has nothing to do with the lightheaded synthesized sonic landscapes or the self-conscious "escapes to fairyland" soundtracks -- this album's overall feel is acoustic, and even though synthesizers are sometimes used, they are only for background atmospheric drones. Much like Loreena McKennitt's genre-transcending music.
I would liken this album to "the mask and mirror" by Loreena McKennitt, "Deep Heart's Core" by Kate Price, "Awake Inside a Dream" by The Angels of Venice, "Island of Bows" by R. Carlos Nakai, and some of the music of Hiroshima.
Overall, this music is is electrifying, incantatory, and joyous. If you are even partially inclined to the albums and musicians I named above, then definitely check "Invocata" out. True to its title, it invokes something deep within you, something magical, something childlike, something long forgotten.
