Customer Reviews:
Vangelis Classic.......2005-08-05
I've been a Vangelis fan since the early eighties and must say "Direct" is my personal favorite. This album rocks but also has some absolutely beautiful pieces as well. It's not so much ambient as it is a work of themes. If you have just found Vangelis, be sure to get this one. A true classic.
Pleasant Vangelis, from the end of the 80's.......2004-01-10
There are times with "Direct" when you can hear hints of Vangelis's later, more epic albums, like "Voices" and "Oceanic". You can feel the direction in which Vangelis wants to go, progressing somewhat away from his patented "Chariots of Fire" sound that inhabits so much of Vangelis's work in the 70's and the 80's. "Direct" sits right on the cusp between the second and third decade of Vangelis's reign as the premiere mainstream composer of symphonic electronic music. A song like 'Elsewhere' or 'The Oracle of Apollo' soars close to the heightened grandeur of "Voices" and "Oceanic", while tunes like 'Glorianna' are almost premonitions for the Gothic oddities "El Greco" and "Mythodea". All in all, "Direct" is a must-have for Vangelis connoisseurs such as myself. But if you're looking for a truly definitive, one-time Vangelis album, I might suggest "Bladerunner" for the 80's and "Oceanic" for the 90's. I'd have given this album 4 stars if not for one track that really jangled on my nerves: 'Intergalactic Radio Station'
Starts Great but dribbles out.......2003-10-10
Vangelis switched over to some real rock'n loud beat stuff that was a decade ahead of Tangerine Dream's Mars Polaris CD. First five tracks are killer, I was truely blown away but then there is a bonus track that doesn't fit in followed but a not so great track and so on and soon it just crumbles. A couple of more good tracks come later... but... Very today sounding stuff really a decade ahead of the music scene back in 1988. If you love the lush floaty music of Apocalypse.. or Albedo etc you'll be put off. Much closer to late 90's Tangerine Dream.
Sorry.. But it doesn't get better than this.......2003-07-10
Old Electronic, but absolutely awsome.
Good Beats.
Super Feelings.
Great emotions.
It's perfectly Ambient, but you still have to tap the floor with your feet. "The Will of The Wind" and "Dial Out" are pure masterwork, in my opinion. I don't think that any other Vangelis got better than this one, Ad I'm yet to find a better Ambient with beat album for my ears... If you do find one, let me know !
One of the best electric new age albums I have heard so far!.......2003-05-30
Direct is the only album I own by Vangelis and right now it's one of my favorite albums. I noticed that Vangelis uses a lot of electric guitar sounds in his music and he is one of the first artists I have heard that have done that. I would recommend this album to any new age listener but recommend it mostly to someone who likes electronic music.
"The Motion Of Stars" is a nice song and he has a great tune on it that he continues to use throughout the whole song. My favorite song on the album is "The Will Of The Wind" and on this one he uses those electric guitar sounds combined with a little funky beat around it and at the end it sort of continues on to the next song "Metallic Rain" but then it changes towards the end. "Intergalactic Radio Station" is also worth a listen to. He uses a great beat and at the end there's a little singing. The only two songs that had singing were that one and "Glorianna[hymn a la femme]. In my opinion, there's not one song that isn't good and I hope that if you buy the album you will like all of the songs to.
Buy this album whenever you have the chance!!
