Customer Reviews:
I got beef with Ryan Grayson.......2005-07-27
This record is great and this band could have been great if Ryan Grayson didn't leave it in mid stride. Although, I must give it up to him for slitting the throat of success at full sail (that is definitely an overstatement). But, I befriended Grayson on his rebound from leaving NY; from leaving his bandmates high, dry and heart-broken. What does this have to do with the record? Absolutely nothing. A year after I met him he did the same to me (us I'm sure that Erik, Jansen, Adam, Broman, etc. are with me, but I cannot speak for them, though.) Whatever can we do with people like this? They just disappear off the face of the earth. What is it that they are looking for? Anyway, I've been watching the price of this record fall for about two or three years - so I decided to buy a copy. I guess that the diminishing price represents the time that has passed in an inverse relationship. Even though I *do* miss the antics, the transient mess (including: butts, empties, records and women's clothing) and above all the man...
I GOT BEEF WITH RYAN GRAYSON
Just a tad bit daunting.......2003-07-06
Somewheree between indie garage-rock and jazz lies The Up On In. At first listen, I wasn't too terribly impressed; by the time I had listened to it a secoind time, I was tappng my foot politely; by my third listen, I was eagerly grooving to the tracks. This group demands something from the modern listener that the modern listener all too often does not want to give: Patience and Attentiveness. You have to listen for the subtle thematic changes on this CD to truly apprecite it. These guys accomplish more with one take, three instruments and simple production techniques than most modern bands do with far more in all three areas.
A little indie pop with your jazz?.......2000-07-21
First off, while I can sort of understand Amazon's classification of this disc..... it is really not "new age" in the John Tesh/Yanni sense. There are no pan flutes. This will not be performed on a clifftop somewhere in Ireland.
Still, really. What's up with this disc? Where should you look in the stores for it? It's instrumental, jazzy, mathy, rocky, indie-y all in one. Let's start with what we know: Zach Barocas, the drummer in this group, was former skinsman for noted DC-core vets Jawbox; along similar lines, Charlie Bennett has toured as bassist for the ex-Jawbox lead singer's latest group; to top it off, the aforementioned ex-Jawbox lead singer (J. Robbins) is the producer of this record. Does "Steps For the Light" have a similarity to past Barocas/Robbins/Jawbox collaborations? Certainly. The angular bass lines and twisting guitar (consult the bridge of "Montreal"), the "hey-I'm-quiet-now-BOOM! -I'M-DESTROYING-MY-KIT" drums ("My Tribe")... it'll make Dischord fans feel right at home. File under "Alt. Rock?"
But it's not that simple. A Latin feel permeates "Intro", while "What Gives: Part 2" is four-four rock. Sure, it's mathy, but there's a definite jazz vibe here too. Check out "Virgil Thompson" for a swingy, super-loud bridge. With this disc, you can expect a potent crossbreeding of indie rock and instrumental jazz, and expect the songs to be concise - 14 tracks, 35 minutes. No noodly soloing. UOI cuts to the chase, delivers the driving rhythms and intricate instrumental interplay, and then cuts you off.
Great!.......2000-06-09
Full of catchy, concise, muscular instrumentals, "Steps For the Light" is sure to the sleeper fave of the indie scene this year. Zach Barocas' tight, precise drumwork provides the groundwork for the guitar and (electric and acoustic) bass to go nuts, but provides a tight enough leash to ensure that the songs don't slip into freeform improv festivals (actually, no song breaks 3:50). This is recommended if you like your instrumentals bite-sized, stripped-down, and soulfully precise.
